I have a Goldtone PBS and would like to get something better now that I'm retired and volunteering my playing weekly. The budget is $1000-1200. My buddy has the Beard Model R which I love, but too expensive. I would like to stay with a woodtone. Any suggestions for a better square neck?
thanks, Ron |

There are some options in that price range. I would first look for a used instrument either here or at the resohangout (resohangout.com). There are also a couple luthiers with instruments in your range,
Steve Smith at Redline

Tom Warner

I've played the Redline and they are nice instruments. I have not played the Appalachian, but they enjoy a good reputation on the resohangout.

You might find a used DeNeve in that price range, a great guitar for the money and a big step up. The one I played was laminate, like many of the Beards, and was a canon. Dick also has made all kinds of custom solid wood guitars. I've heard lots of good things about McKenna and may be similar to the Beard R, I believe they are both soundwell guitars (Howard?) There is a McKenna listed for $800 on the Resohangout. You might also find a used Rob Ickes model Wechter Scheerhorn in that price range. _________________ Greg
