Bob, I'm not sure if this should be in Pedal Steel or Buy and Sell. I have broken one of my wire conectors that connects my rod to the changer under my 73 push pull. Does anyone sell these? I contacted the Emmons company and they do not stock these anymore. I made a makeshift one out of a paper clip, but I am not very confident in it. Any Ideas? If anyone knows where to get them, I would like to go ahead and replace them all. I tried a large fish hook, but it snapped when I tried to bend it. I have to find my torch to try heating it first. I am open for suggestions. Thanks, Michael T.

Michael, you have got mail! In all my many years of playing a push pull, I have broken one of those hooks. I carry an extra all the time in my pac seat but have never broken the second one. I would not think it at all necessary to consider changing out all of them on your guitar. I will send one to you, just give me your address.

It isn't "music wire." That's what they make strings from. I use "spring wire" which I was given by a local spring company. They make springs, and gave me a piece of scrap from off the floor.

It's about sixteen gauge wire, and needs heat treated.

I make the hook first, then put it in the oven at 450 degrees for an hour, then let it cool slowly.

Let me know if you need a piece of the wire. I can whack a 4-6 inch piece off and mail it to you. OR, look for a spring manufacturer in your town. Lots of towns have them, and that's the wire you want.

Chick is absolutely right. It's spring steel. If you use any other material the wire will eventually unbend.

I've had good success heating it gently with a propane torch until it just barely glowed, then bending it with needlenose and letting it cool.

Works for me.

Or you could just buy them from Bobbe Seymour.

Just cut you a piece of wire you get at a hobby store or the hardware and it'll work fine. You may have to readjust it a time or two to get the length right but it's not a big deal. I've only broken one and when I did I couldn't turn the guitar over to fix it because I had just had surgery on my right shoulder. I had to run next door and get Cal Sharp to steal one from the back neck so I could keep playing that night. I carry extras now.

Just go to any Home Depot, or equivalent, and buy one of those little red wire flags that they use to mark property lines with. You should get about 5 or 6 connectors out of one. Use needle-nose pliers to bend it, and copy one you already have. One of those flags should set you back about 9 to 11 cents.

WOW! Thanks for all the help guys! That's what I like about steel guitarists, great people always willing to help. Lowes didn't know what music wire was, but I got some wire that is about the same size, but it seems softer. I haven't tried to bend the fish hook again yet. Been rehearsing. Bobbie, I need to contact you for some Sho Bud Knee levers. And so right now, between being busy rehearsing the show and being lazy, Jerry, I think your idea is best. Check your mail, LOL. Hi Michael:
I had one break on me also. Went down to the local motorcycle shop, got a piece of broken throttle cable, cut it to length, bent it to shape and it works perfectly. Been on there for two years or more.

I've got a roll of picture frame wire that I've used for probably 15 years and I can't remember when the last one broke. They're not quite as pretty as the factory models but they sure are affordable and available.

Mike call me at 779-8063. I have some that I got from Emmons years ago! I've broke only one since 1966, so you don't need to replace them all. I'll give you two that should last you about 30 years.

Michael, those clip wires are made from p[ano string wire, also called music wire. They come in all guages of thickness, so you would want to take a piece of it to a source that sells it to get the correct guage. Try a music store that sells pianos and check to see if they can order them. But most piano stores have someone in the area that services their pianos. Find out who that is and see whether he stocks the gauge you need.Better yet, find some one who who rebuild old pianos and he will probably have a barrel full of discards that are no longer good for pianos sound, but excellent for what you need.
