This made me proud to see my late friend " Stan Ross " of Gold Star Recording Studios added to the Honor Roll of the Grammys on the Show last night & to see our old neighborhood brother musician " Glenn Campbell " giving it all he's got left. I've had a great ride with these two wonderful people over the years. They have giving me a lot of memories to live with. Thanks to both of them & may God bless their family and them forever.Sincerely,Uncle Leo J.Eiffert,Jr. ![Winking](images/smiles/icon_winking.gif) |

Every time I drive by Vine St. and Santa Monica Blvd. I cringe at the crummy strip mall where Gold Star once was, although you can get a pretty good artery clogger of a Philly cheese steak at one of the shops... |

When I was a freelance engineer around Hollywood in the mid 70s one of my greatest memories was being all alone in that room at Gold Star setting up sessions where all those great 50s & 60s records were recorded. All the Specialty label stuff like Little Richard,Don & Dewey, all the Spector and Jack Nitzsche produced stuff, all the girl groups like the Ronettes, the Crystals, the surf records... Ritchie Valens,Eddie Cochran recorded there. The wrecking crew...The list goes on and on. That place and the Palomino had mojo just dripping off the walls.I couldn't believe it when they tore it down.It was like tearing down Sun studios. |

I was fortunate enough to do a number of sessions there in the '70's. Very cool place, dripping with mojo, as Mike says.
I remember it was the first place I recorded a steel direct - didn't care for that - and they had a wonderful Steinway & a kickin' B3.
Santa Monica & Vine was a busy music intersection for awhile, not only with Gold Star, but also the first Studio Instrument Rentals, Paramount Recording Studios, Clover Studio down the block and a few others as well.
The only thing left from the old days is the Army/Navy store on the northeast corner.
Too bad... |

Yep, and here it is ….
The other three corners are a fast food restaurant, a gas station, and a strip mall. Welcome to L.A. 2012 …..

Cool topic.
Do any of you guys have any pictures from the old days when you worked at Gold Star, either inside or out?
I just saw the Wrecking Crew DVD, my buddy had a copy he got and it is really great. I love that whole era of So Cal. _________________ Regards, Craig

Hey Skip,
Noticed that you played on Chris Hillman's 'Like a Hurricane', with Hal Blaine. Did you get to play with him much?
Also, I'm a big fan of Johnny Rivers, was just listening to his Rhino set yesterday.
You've had a great career. _________________ Regards, Craig

Is Randy Newman referring to the Vine Street you're talking about, with his song?
