According to the Gibson shipping totals found in Andre Duchossoir's book "Gibson Electric Steel Guitars 1935 - 1967", there were only 57 of this model in 1956, and 10 more in '59. I bought two of these last year, after having not seen any for ... a very long time. One of them had a 1955 serial number, and a case that had been painted orange on the outside. The other one hung on the stage wall in the vintage room at GC Hollywood (formerly the Gordon theatre). It was there, not for sale, but I kept my eye on it for many years. Finally one day they were putting price tags on all the lap steels on the wall, and I made my deal for a nearly pristine example down to the grey top hat knobs. The case was long gone, now it resides in the orange case. The '55 example went to a certain Mr Lurvey, who had also been looking for one for a long time... unfortunately, the '55s knobs had been purloined, replaced by ordinary Strat-style knobs. The one in the ebay auction sold quickly for $590.00 , and the knobs on it look like they came from a National.. BTW the sellers, Olivia's Vintage, have some other very nice early examples of Gibson lap steel history up for bids right now (I have no affiliation, but think they're pretty nice guys).

They have some really nice stuff for sale-some priced well, and some priced.....well....
I especially like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-mid-1950s-Gibson-7-STRING-ULTRATONE-lap-STEEL-guitar-all-original-/150755815156?pt=Guitar&hash=item2319bf2ef4 , but I think it's in the overpriced category.

I especially like the earliest ones with the rectangular coral colored buttons.
