I thought I would post a thread about some steel guitar artistry that I like very much. Tom Brumley's playing on "Out Of My Mind" by Don Rich is amazing. To me, it is amazing in its pleasing tones and phrasing on a 'relatively' simple piece.

I say relatively simple, because even though the notes themselves might not be complex, the way that Tom puts them together just right and expresses them is NOT at all simple, to me. He is soooo smooth, too.

When I sit down to practice, among other things that I play, I like to try my hand at this intro. I try to play it as smoothly and with as much feeling as I can. I hope that is a good way to practice. It IS fun.

If you have never heard Tom play the intro, you can go to the Rebel/Ricky website to hear it, or to YouTube to see and hear it.

Here's the link to the Rebel audio clip:

"Your mileage may vary", but this one really 'grabs me'.

Tom's touch, tone and execution are fantastic on this cut. How about that bar slant he does in the intro and then grins at the camera!!!! I have seen this before but never get tired of looking and listening to it.

Ah yes, that bar slant in the intro can be clearly seen on the video! In recent years I've discovered how much VALUE the videos of the great players are! I remember through the years how I practiced over and over from records, tapes, CD's--the intros, breaks, & backup licks for the cover hits I had to learn for whatever band I was in at the time. I did OK, but never gave it much thought how much more of an advantage the video was until recent years!

Found the tune several years ago on a Don Rich CD I picked up at the ET Record Shop on Broadway. Definitely a jewel.

Brumley's intro' to "I'll Go Out of my Mind"....
shows him playing a gigantic REVERSE SLANT....

down near the 5th or 6th fret however, what you hear is a pedal raising of the notes invovled.

How could this be?

Ray, I believe it's the lick from the Way To Survive intro. Strings 3 & 5, reverse slant with the A pedal down, then as the lower end of the bar moves back, the B pedal brings up the 3rd string. Hopefully I described that accurately! If not, somebody will chime in with the right info.

For those who aren't sure what he's doing is hitting the 4th and 6th like on E, and then lower the 4th and raise the 6th, and move back one fret, then go to A &B pedals 4th and 5th strings. Sorry, habit of explainin licks. Tom was a good friend. When was involved in ZB guitar building, he'd call me quite a few times on units I sold for them. He claims I sold 54 of them out of my living room. I had some super rich sounding geetars in that venture. But, they weighted a ton. I have 2 broken bones in my spine and gettin too old to hassle with em. At one time, like a nut, I carried the geetar in my right hand and my Twin-Fender in my left. I'm payin for it now. I only weighted 140lbs back then.

Thanks,

I did a search on the Forum and found this post by Greg Cutshaw from 5 years ago that includes the tab:

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=101281&highlight=mind

If you've never visited Greg's website, he has tons of very good tab, sound files, and other neat steel stuff.

A big "thank you" to Greg for tabbing this one!
