I have got too many guitars and I am tired of fooling with them. I have been thinking about selling all of them and buying just one guitar. If I did this I would want to get the best guitar available. I was thinking a T8 Clinesmith with one neck a pedal neck if that is possible. I know the scale of Todd's guitars is 24 1/2 and I have never played anything but 22 1/2 so I don't know if thats a problem or not. Has anybody got any ideas about the Clinesmith's and does anyone recommend another type of quality guitar. Thanks

I am in the Clinesmith camp. They are fine works of art that play and sound fantastic. I have not played one of his pedal guitars, but I've had 2 consoles and my ubiquitous single neck Clinesmith lap steel. Hopefully, I'll have another in the near future (going for a D-10, I believe).

I sold my swamp ash Fender stringmaster and a couple Richenbacher pandas after I got my Clinesmith console.

Just astonishing craftsmanship, playability and tone. Well worth the money.

The scale length was not an issue for me when I made the switch.

looks like you already have the holy grails of non-pedal, IMO, i dont thinking selling all them and buying "the best available" is going to do anything they wont -

get Todd to build a S-8 lap to see if you liked the sound / scale and string spacing.

Yeah really.
Also don't forget the schlepp factor. The best triple neck that money can buy is still a triple neck and is a lot heavier than a single neck. I get a lot of music out of my incredible sounding Cruztone S-8 w/3 legs tuned to A13 and it fits in a gigbag for a headless Steinbeger bass. There's a lot to said for that.If I was just doing sitdown gigs or playing at home and had the bread,a Clinesmith - maybe a double neck would be on my short list just to finish off my collection.I dunno if I'd like it any more than my Stringmaster though.

I'm pretty sure my steels said Rickenbacher on them.

I think he's referring to "pandas" as not being model names. It's a pet name and when it's said most people here know what you're talking about.

You'll never see any black & white cat-related beast with one of those badges on it's crown.

It's like getting mauled again each time I hear a Bakelite criminalized with that horrific mistake.

My 2 cents.....
it's not that I don't like my other steels, it's that I don't play them since I got my Clinesmith, so now I am selling them off in hopes that someone will play them.
If you like that Bigsby sound but can't afford one, Clinesmith is a good way to go.

Another vote for Clinesmith. I haven't been playing my others much since it arrived. Beautiful instruments built by a great guy. It's definitely got some mojo.

The Bigsby is from 1948, the Clinesmith, next to it, is 001. Mighty Fine...

Thanks for all the responses. A bigsby would be nice but probably over budget for me. I am going to go with a Clinesmith console. Either a D8 non-pedal or possibly a T8 with one pedal neck. I have e-mailed Todd and asked some questions to help me decide. Thanks for all the help.

Jim

I understand your interest in identifying and getting the best. My decision was for the Clinesmith D-8 and couldn't be happier. For me, once I decided on the Clinesmith, the big decision was whether to get wood or metal necks. Mike Neer gave some good advise, but the decision comes down to your tastes in music and the tone you want. Todd is great to work with and it is worth the wait.

Hmmm... I wonder if there would be any Mojo in Murph's old Bigsby? What a beautiful guitar!
