What's the general Forum concensus/experience with this amp for PSG? Any good? Have a chance to purchase one at a pretty good price (I think) $250- $300. Any input would be welcomed.

Good amp. Basically like a Nashville 400 in a larger cabinet and adds a second channel. Same power same tone config. for steel. Similar value. That price sounds fair.

Good amp. I think the Vegas 400 with the larger cabinet has a better sound then the smaller cabinet Nashville 400. It's a workhorse. I traded for a used Vegas in 1985 and it's only needed one minor repair to date. The downsize is it's a heavy amp and seems to get heavier every year. It would be a great amp for a sit-down job.

Nothing to add but that the price seems a titch on the low end of normal, but not so far out of range as to make one ask "OK, so what's wrong with it?"
If I needed an amp, I'd be all over it
PS: the larger cabs in general sound a bit sweeter

Agree with above with one caveat:

I hate that stupid dual MID/SHIFT knob!

I have had a few Vegas 400s and almost all of them had to have extensive cleaning with pot cleaner because they were scratchy. A couple of them would give me a few surprise POPS at the most in opportune time.

If you get the pot cleaned out they are ok, but I never did like that split MID/SHIFT idea.

Thanks all. I'll consider all your input - especially the mid/shift pot issue - when I get a chance to look and listen.

It's a no-brainer, jump on it immediately Shocked

The Vegas was specifically designed for steel, and delivers the goods.
If it has had the LeMay mod (or equivalent) it will be in Session 500 territory (speaking from experience)

For the Mid/Shift problem: turn off the volume on the Vegas and then rotate the Mid/Shift knobs back & forth until it goes away.

I'm not a Peavey fan for steel guitar but if I had to buy a Peavey steel amp it would be the Vegas.
I have tried all the Peaavey amps with mods and without. The stock Vegas is best.

If you don't mind the weight, the Vegas is a great amp. I really like mine with the stock 1502 speaker. It cuts through a noisy bar room quite well and with good tone.

It's a great amp. I have two of them. I like the two different channels because I play steel and lead, which requires different EQ.Larry

Guess I'm the odd man out here. I abdo-lutely hated mine. Friend called from TNN when they were buying their first backlines. He said he could add one to the order. Hey! It was an amp designed for steel, and, although I loved my Lab L 9, I jumped at the chance to have a steel amp. I didn't get to play it before I bought it, and sold my Lab on the day it arrived. Couldn't stand the "sterile" ss sound! I know! I know! The Lab was ss too,,, but they don't sound like an ss amp.
And the Mid/Shift was what generated the most disgust! Back to a Twin with a 15. Happy as a clam! I don't begrudge guys who like them, but I don't like the sound of them at all.

I have this Great amp for purdy music (If you dont mind me sayin cowboyin) thats what I like.
never let anyone play a bass guitar through it, wierd stuff happens, I got lucky and somehow it resurected,
My vegas is to valuable for anything else but purdy music
The mid shift, keep it simple * 10 oclock & the other at 2 oclock , even visa versa sounds good, Ive learned to keep my presence between 10 & 2 oclock also, It can get ear irritating.
If your playin Rock, get a hot rod deluxe, They cut through the earplugs your wearing a lot better.

When the Nashville 400 was the latest rage and everybody had to have one, I jumped on the band wagon and got one too. I was in Herb Remington's steel guitar store and was talking to him about it and told him that I was not happy with the low end. He said I should have got the Vegas 400. Pretty much the same amp except in a larger cabinet. His opinion was that they sounded better than the Nashville 400's. I never bought a Vegas, but I thought you might be interested in Herb Remington's comment.

Not much for me to add but this: If you like a Nashville 400, you should love the Vegas. In addition to the handy "second" channel, as others have mentioned the larger cabinet will give a deeper, fuller tone especially if placed on the floor.
The Session 400 and Vegas 400 are my two favorite Peavey amps.

Good Luck

Have one I bought new over 25 years ago and love it. It needs the mod done to get rid of the harshness in the mids. Very Happy

Don't use it anymore. Too heavy for me. I do like the dual channels. It sits here in my music room as an decoration. It was completely modded by K. Fox. I bought it soon after. I never did do much with it because the reverb is very touchy. I guess most people use an outside reverb unit but I just gave up on it basically. Wanna buy it?
