One question for the dude who had all the trouble with the used steel....Why didn,t you just order a NEW steel from one of the many dealers here in the states? All you would have to worry about then is keeping strings on it.All of this stress would have surely been worth the three or four hundred extra dollars,,,now and in the years to come..........tomsteel

Hi Dude, thank you for your enquiry. There are a number of reasons why I went for this deal.

1- We live in a 3rd world country with very little acces to specialised equipment.

2- Due to political reasons the Dollar/Rand exchange rate is hideous. I remember the early days when we used to pay 1 Rand for 2 Dollars. Last Year we had to pay 6 Rand for 1 Dollar! So everything from the States was unaffordable. A new PSG would have cost the equivalent of 4 months South African salary.

3- Then after September 11 the Rand tumbled even further. It would have cost an 8 months salary for a new S12 PSG!

4- I did my homework before I ordered the guitar. However I did not count on the fact that some reputable people act like hustlers. The same thing could have happened if I had bought a NEW steel from one of the many dealers in the States. So you would have asked me exactly the same type of question.

5- I did NOT have the benefit of hindsight. It is very easy to be smart afterwards.

But tomdude, in the end it worked out great.

I have a good sounding guitar for half the price. In the process I learned how to set up and maintain the guitar. There is a lot of local interest in the process of restoring the guitar. I made a lot of new friends both here and overseas and the forum restored my faith in humanity. I would do it again, if a good deal shows up, but now I know who I can ask and trust. So in the end I gained a lot more than if I had bought a new PSG out of the box.

How about you?
