I have a Carter Starter. I feel I need to upgrade. The prices of the pro steels are way too much to spend to just play in my basement. I heard about the Stage One and would like some of your serious opinions about this guitar as an upgrade.

Can't go wrong with a Stage One for the money, and Doug Earnst is a great guy. To hear a stage one, watch Mikey D. on RFD Sunday nights on a new country show. Sounds great.

I love mine, and from what I hear its a huge upgrade from the carter starter. A friend has a gfi student and i MUCH prefer my stage one. Its a solid guitar, sounds great and is easy to tune. plus Doug is awesome.

The Stage One is so sweet and easy to play. It's solid and it sounds fantastic. It stays in tune very well too. I'd buy another one right now, but I want an S10 C6. That's the only limitation with the Stage One, you can't change the copedent...at least very easily. A good mechanic may be able to add/change pulls, but I wouldn't try anything without checking with Doug or some of the guys here who know better first.

Jerry, it's Virginia Dreams Centerstage. It airs on Sunday evening, right before Hee Haw. 6:30 CT, I believe. The band is Cooter's guys (Dukes of Hazzard); that's how I met them. I've been driving up to Harrisonburg, VA to do the shows.
Maybe it's my little TV speaker... but it sounds like they're compressing the CRAP out of the signal I'm sending them. Definitely not the quality I'm giving.

I've had my Teak StageOne since June 2010 ..... and  LOVE IT !
Mikey was the biggest help in my decision  .... Doug ain't too bad either  !

I'm in agreement with everybody else on here. I have a Stage One also and love it. Easy to play , great tone, and very light weight and it does stay in tune very well.

I have the old Zum steel Stage One model. IIRC, I bought it over some 13 years ago. I am a professional musician and I needed something as light as possible because back then I worked in a band where I also played keyboards and guitar. I also needed to fly all over Europe doing tours and the Zum Steel was (and still is) perfect for that, imo.
I totally agree with many others here on this forum that this is an excellent sounding steel guitar. I use it on all my gigs and recording sessions and the playability is outstanding. It also stays in tune very well.
I did have a few problems with it, though and I am not sure if this has ever happened to anyone else but twice, the weld on a bell crank broke. The first time on stage during the 3rd song in a 45 minute set in Luxembourg and the second time a few hours before I had to catch a plane to do festival in the south of France.
In Luxembourg I had to find someone on a Sunday afternoon who could weld it back on because I had another gig there on Sunday evening and the second time I found someone near my hometown who repaired it shortly before I had to leave for the airport.
I have no clue what caused these failures. I understand that Doug Earnest has taken over the production of the Stage One since 2007 and maybe those welds have changed and improved in the meantime.
Another thing I have a bit of a problem with is when changing a broken string. The space between the finger and the body is quite small. It can be somewhat difficult to get the ball end of the string in there and stay there while on a dark stage.
I looked at the pictures of the new models but didn't see much of a difference compared to my old one. I'll probably take out some of the wood between the fingers and the end plate to make it easier accessible.
Having said that, I still think it is a great steel for the money and perhaps the trouble I had was unique to my specific one  I will certainly try out the new model here in the Netherlands as soon as I get the chance because I believe it is a great sounding instrument. |

I agree with all the other S.O. players here. GREAT bang for buck, plus Doug is a great guy and will treat you right. I love my guitar, and get nothing but rave compliments from everyone who hears it. Solid build, solid tone, solid intonation.

another +1 here! BTW if you are the least bit handy you CAN change the copedant on these guitars.
I tune it up top every time I play but the raises/lowers rarely have to be touched. Pull release guitars are very stable once properly set up.
