This clip is even more embarrassing than the George Harrison song (that was done for the same TV series)! Needless to say we were hamming it up here as per instructions - but there's no excuse for my playing.
I didn't love the instrument in those days - I've learned some respect for its heritage since then and I started to to take it more seriously shortly after all these various excerpts were filmed in the '70s.
Good or bad, it's all in a day's work and, fortunately, Thames Television didn't dock my pay-cheque for every clam or cliche! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

Hi, Jerry!
(I'm now wondering why I left my spectacles off for this - maybe I was attempting some sort of disguise!)
I wish I still had that guitar, though. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

To his credit, Joachim emailed me before posting this clip asking if I minded or not. I said 'Fine..' (it's in the public domain, after all) but had reservations.
Most of us have some musical skeletons in our respective closets, but this one would require a protracted stay in the orthopaedic ward to render it palatable!
I've tried watching with the sound turned down (a bit better) but even our 'clowning' is pretty indigestible.
I apologise with the qualification that maybe it 'made me stronger'; I know that I learned from it at the time!

I found this clip when searching for the 60's band Timebox. John Halsey was their drummer, Billy Bremner was succesful with Rockpile, and isn't the bass player with Albert Lee?
Anyway I think the quality of the music is fine and it fits the song perfectly. And for me as an outsider, it made me smile and I hope others will to, which is sometimes a very good thing. Thank You! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Yes, Joachim; the bass-player is Brian Hodgson.
This band, 'Fatso', is essentially the genesis of what is now 'Hogan's Heroes' - Pater Baron replaced John Halsey, Billy disappeared to Sweden where he still plays and Gerry Hogan came on board.
Here's a later picture showing the Heroes with Albert. (L to R: Brian, me, Peter, Albert, Gerry...)

Thanks Roger. I didn't know about that. It was maybe one or two years earlier that I've seen Albert play in Frankfurt with American musicians, one of them was "Biff" Sterling Ball. A few years later he had this "English group" . _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Billy Bremner was hamming it up both visually and on guitar. At least you didn't ham it up on steel - or did you? _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Hi, Ken!
I just can't bear to watch it what with the tension in my body, the 'flat' hand with my wrist anchored for grim death on the back neck - small wonder it sounds like it does!
At least Billy's blunders were deliberate.....
...or were they?

Roger
I thinks its good to have a retrospective look/listen to how we were in the 1970's, and then compare how much progress we've made. I used to chronically overplay back in those days, and have much more taste nowadays.
You might cringe but it was all a steep learning curve for us in those days. Just think how much you have progressed technically. The sad part is that the British audiences didn't know any better then - they couldn't discern who was good and who wasn't.
Billy Bremner is certainly one of the better pickers that the UK has produced. He used to completely knock me out sometimes with his playing, and I would put him up there with Albert and Ray Flacke for raw ability. Having said that, he did actually drop one in his break in this clip, and then went on to try to cover it up with some clowning. Roger,
I sure hope you got paid well to do that!!!!
BTW, I just came from dinner here in Abergavenny where I was entertained by my English, Welch, French, and Dutch colleagues hurling good natured insults at each other and the Scots, Irish, Germans, and Italians for 3 hours. Tomorrow I may try that traditional English breakfast in your honor! _________________ Bill Cunningham
