 A question to steel players ? I don't think i have seen this here before . How many steel players are involved in ''Drag Racing ''? I am with my son-n-law . We are racing a full blown small block S10 Chevrolet truck . This truck cannot be ran on the street !It has a Ford ''9'' inch rear end , full roll cage ,power glide transmission ,delay box ,5000 stall , rev limiter , ladder bar suspension . We will be running three classes with it this summer . He is wanting a '' Big Block ''but my daughter is holding out on the money ! Imagine that huh ?  We are running in mid 11's right now but hoping to step it up a little . The engine is only putting out around '' 375 '' horsepower , but we think it's doing great for a small powered engine ! We hope to step it up to around '' 550 '' horsepower soon . This will put us in the 10's or somewhere close . Thanks for looking . G.P. ***UPDATE***We have done some changes on the black S-10 . It now has a 406 CI . Engine . Best time is 10:19 at around 129 mph in the quarter mile . My son in law won the Truck Series Championship last season with the updated truck . .

We used to race a super stock AMX back in '69-'72. It was one of the 52 that were made by Hurst for American motors. If I remember correctly the low ET was 10:26 at 134 MPH. We won several national events back then. Some of the racers and tech crew used to come out an hear us play if we were near the tracks. (multi-tasking)
I've been into Mopars since '65 and have had three Hemis and currently have a '65 Plymouth Belvedere II with a reworked 440. My wife drives a Chrysler 300C Hemi.

This shouldn't get moved or deleted. There have been many posts in this section in the past regarding other hobbies steel guitar players have.
Any kind of car racing is too dangerous for me. Don't have the cohones for it. Takes a special breed to be able to race.

Back in the 70s I had a '64 Plymouth Sport Fury with a 426 "street package"--used to race at Raceway Park and Island Dragway in Jersey.
I was also on a racing team of a friend who had a chopped candy apple red '40 Willys pickup with a supercharged max wedge Dodge/torqueflight combo--ran mid 9s. The name of the truck was "Mother's Truckers"
Those were the days

I was involved in drag racing late 60's, early 70's. I raced mostly stock classes. My brother and all my friends did as well. Some gassers, some other hi po classes like Super Stock etc....sportsman's classed where you could have fun and still not be out a lot of money. My cuz still races a little small block roadster.
When our local track switched over to IHRA and break-outs I lost interest. Only heads up racing for me. Also a career that involved a lot of moving and traveling was a factor.
I miss it and still like to go see 'em though. Then there's the St. Louis convention same weekend as the NHRA Nationals. 
Steel guitars takes all of my interest for several years. That G.A.S got to be costly as well. I'd probably have been much better off sticking with racing as far as expense |

Gary, I searched around the tube and other sites one time trying to find a video that someone might have taken--couldn't find a thing. Maybe if I find an old photo I can take a picture of it and up-load it (if I can figure out how!)

The steel guitar doesn't come in until around 3 minutes and the drag racing is around 3:30. If you don't like Ministry, it's a long wait.

My senior year in high school and for a few years thereafter I used to visit the drag races out at the Scappoose Airport, OR., races however...........
There was nothing that could match todays' brightest star on the Oregon drag race circuit.
It's Oregon's ELECTRIC battery operated dragster that has been burning them off of the track in each and every competition.......three broken records in just one night!

Gary,
I race a 1965 Comet Cyclone. My current engine is a Dart Racing Windsor block bored and stroked to 454 CID pumping out 700 HP. It has a full tubular chassis and runs in the 9.70 second range at around 140 mph. This is my second hobby. Steel guitar is my first love.

''WOW'' you guys are getting my engine revved up by all this ! Some great reply's . You guys are the best . David i love those Cyclones ! I remember back in the 60's when they were hot items at the track i raced at and still are ! Riverside Raceway at Procterville Ohio . I was running two cars . A '' 57 '' Chevy C-Gas and a 1950 Plymouth with a '' Hemi '' under the hood also in C-Gas . Never had enough money to go real fast though ! The Gustin brothers had a '' 55 '' Chevy C-Gasser that was the hottest thing around . They also raced the Cyclones and they were hard to beat . Wow this is bringing back lots of memories ! Hey Gary. When I'm not building Pack Seats I build racing engines for some of the local dirt track drivers at the I-30 Speedway. Mostly Super Stock and IMCA modified small block chevy engines. My all time favorite class has to be ASCS Sprint cars. 800 hp in a car that weighs 1260 pounds. I get my drag racing fix with my next door neighbor. He runs a 67 mustang with a 572ci big block ford putting out approx 950hp at the flywheel.
On any given day you can call or come by the shop at Steelers Choice and talk about pedal steel or get in on some great "bench racing". Whether its a slow ballad by Paul Franklin or a finely tuned racing engine at 8000 rpm, it's music to my ears! |

I've heard that Dennis Gage from My Classic Car is also a steel guitar enthusiast. Has anyone else heard anything about it?
Ray McCarthy we both had to be at Etown at the same time back then. I was there the day they opened the gates (July 4,1965) and we raced steadily through '72.
When I find the pic's of our '69 AMX I'll try to post them. It ran under a few different names; Flemington Rambler, Raceware Sales and Trans/End.
The guy that drove it was Ted Kijek. Back then we weren't allowed to use wheelie bars so I should have a few shots of it standing up on the back bumper. |

Dan , Back in the '60"s & '70"s when i was living in Memphis , i had the priviledge of meeting several of the mid-south sprint car and modified drivers. See if you recognize these names : Clay Loceher (sp?), Bobby Ward , Bubby Jones , Hooker Hood , Sam Swindell , Alvin Gatlin and a few more. The tracks were Riverside , Oceola , Blytheville Ar. and Milan in Tenn. In those days , anybody that had a down-tube frame and Hillborn FI was a serious go fast prospect. All that stuff , if i remember correctly, came from Ca and around the midwest and spread very quickly.
Sorry , i don't know much about drags , but my pal Tommy Skelton ( N. MS) (real good steeler & engine builder) and his brother do a bunch of bracket racin around the midsouth. I almost stayed on
