It's a toss up between, MSA, SHOW-PRO, RAINS.

My first choice was a RUSSLER, but, I have no idea on how much their new pedal steels go for, in fact it was only going to be a RUSSLER, but since they have no idea on how much to charge for their new RUSSLER pedal steels, and since I can't find the prices on their web site (is it a Top Secret still, I had a Secret clearance in the U.S.A.F. does that count) looks like it's back to, MSA or SHOW-PRO or RAINS, at least they have price lists.

Now how do I go about picking the winner?

Lets see, I have owned a Sho-Bud, a MSA, and currently I have a ZUM, FRANKLIN, EMCI, EMMONS and a Fender non-pedal, life is a b..............

I love trying out different brands of steel guitars, kinda like cars and golf clubs, how do you know until you really own them. I have had Emmons, Sho-Bud, Fessy's, Marlen's,etc. Most recently I bought a Rains from Duane Dunnard. I was so impressed that I have ordered a new one from Gary Carpenter. My experience so far with Gary has been a very good one. He has been more than far on pricing, he has given me a fair trade in on another guitar, and he has done everything he can to make me want to buy from him. You sure can't beat his warranty! Bottom line, if I were you I would try one of these great guitars. Next I would venture on to one of Fred Justice's steels, that's my plans. Fred is top notch as well, gentleman all the way, and a good guy to deal with as is Gary. As for the Russler, beautiful, and one day I hope to try one of these as well. After all if Russ Hicks plays one, and has input into it, it has to be a great steel guitar. Be patient, give these guys time to get the ball rolling with their new product, I'm sure it will be worth the small wait.

Final remark: So far, nothing I have played meets my personal needs as the Emmons Legrande II D-10 (pre-year approx.2001). As all the above implies, you have to try one to give it the honest personal opinion, and so far this is my opinion. But who knows, after trying the Rains, Russler, Justice, etc, I may change my mind, time will tell.

Hey, I don't think I heard a Williams mentioned in here. I think they're great guitars and they have their prices listed on their site. Give it a try.

Thanks Dickie, you're correct, Williams is a fine instrument. I have never owned one, but I do have a friend with one. He really enjoys his, and it's a beauty as well.

Seriously, I have 2 MSA Millenniums, and don't need anything else. But if Legend (formerly Carpsteel) made a 12 string, I'd get one to take to rehearsals, etc.

Anyone who's thinking about a new steel owes it to themselves to check out Frank Carter's new Infinity line.
I spent a bunch of time with them at the PHX show, and they are outstanding in all respects.

Since Kenneth sort of made mention of the lack of pricing on the site, I'd like to mention things I'd like to see all steel sites have.

Types of models offered: Lacquer, Mica, S10, SD10, D10, S12, SD12, D12, etc..

A listing of available pickups..

Price list with details of what options cost: Extra knees, pedals, raise helper springs, splits, compensators, etc..

Pictures of various models, especially with close-ups of the changer and rodding..

A listing of features that differentiate between your guitar and the next guys offering....

Let's put these thing out front and center and give the buyer as much info as possible to make a decision.

My two cents....flame on....

There are 36 pedal steel manufactures listed here on the Forum.

22 post their prices.
14 do not post prices.

For what reason the 14 pedal steel manufactures do not post prices is unknown, but it's their choice and their buisness, they are going to sell steels no matter what.

Again, why not list prices.

I am inclined when searching on the web for an item I need to buy to either e-mail or phone the company involved for pricing. Most companies are up front with their products and the prices for items they sell. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buys web sites, they all advertize their prices on the web.

I needed a chemical cleaner to wash the algae & mold from my tile roof, one company had lots of info on their product, but no price list, they wanted you to call or e-mail. I declined and searched for another company that sold the same product and listed the price. Maybe if I called the first company, I could have purchased the cleaner at a cheaper price. It's just my nature, I'm the consumer with the cash, I decide how to spend.

It's a pain just shopping for a new car, you have no idea on how much the dealer will charge, been this way for years. No one pays the exact price you paid for the same exact car, and I mean down to the penny.

Pedal steel sales should not be like buying a new car, it's should be straight forward & upfront price listing.

As is mentioned, it's the sellers perogative to not post prices or information if they want to. But my thing is this, why not put your prices and info out there? Every bit of info you can put on your web site is one less question you'll be interrupted with, and more than likely the call you get will be an order not a question. Whether it's new or used, I won't be buying without a listed price, that's just me and you can say what you want about that. You have your way of doing things, I have mine. So be it.

My experience is limited, but...

I love the way my Mullen plays and I don't like the way it sounds. Bob Hoffnar brought his Rains over to a big party we had last weekend and I got a chance to listen a lot and play a little. The Rains plays beautifully - I'd say at least as good as my Mullen -and the tone was fantastic.

To be fair, Bob had installed his hand-wound pickups on it and I don't know what sort of pickups Rains uses normally. As soon as possible, I'm putting a set of Bob's pickups on my Mullen and hope to have something close to the tone he was getting.

Take a good look at the Rains and check into Bob's pickups.

I use Bob's pickups on my guitars. They are terrific.

MSA's modular pickup system allows you to change pickups instantly and compare them. I tried a True Tone, the stock pickup, which I believe is a George L, and a custom made EMG active pickup. Bob's Tone Aligners sounded better than all the others.

Kenneth,
As a very small-time builder I must admit that I am unsure as to what is best to put on my web site. So far I have left the price out, thinking that this will attract the serious buyer instead of tire-kickers, which I have experienced there is a huge amount of.

I did include a "Contact" page on my web site. All it will take is for a person to write me an intelligent email worded in such a way that it tells me that I have a serious shopper to deal with, instead of the one word messages like: Price? How much? Pedals?
...and so on.

If the potential buyer would include something like:
I am (name) living in (country, state, province etc) would like to know the price of your steel.
This would invoke confidence on both sides and the start of a mutually enjoyable buyer-seller relationship where all the details are hashed out.

When I get a better feel for this internet selling, and get a bigger product line than the SD 10, I may start listing prices.

Why don't you just call or email Russler and ask them for a price on what you need? I don't get it.

With all that hardware you already have, I can't see how cost would even enter into the equation. Question However, a good guess would be that a Russler will cost more than a Carter or GFI, but less than a Franklin or Anapeg. Very Happy (Even an Emmons can go for well over 6 grand, with enough options.)

As to why some don't list prices, it's three reasons.

1.) They don't have to constantly update their websites
2.) Their sales are based on how many they can build, not what they cost
3.) Listed prices invite comparisons, and some builders may not be comfortable with that
