Best Deal You ever got on a steel.

What is the best find you ever came across deal wise? A friend of mine bought a black 1985 D10 EMMONS p/p for $800.00 just last year!!! I died when he told me just 2 months ago that he sold the guitar back to the man who sold it to him after he decided he wanted to play again. This kind of thing just doesnt happen everyday!!! I need to find a deal like that! What do you got?

I found a 66 Emmons Years ago for (about 15) for 600 bucks, D-10, black with 8 & 5. Guitar was just dirty, not really hurt at all. I sold it about 6 months later for 2500, still a good deal for them. This was not a forum trasaction---Henry

I also bought about the same time, a beautiful blue laquer MSA Classic SS D-10 ,8 & 5 for $500. Sold it later too.

We sold D-10s around here in Texarkana back and forth to each other for a thousand several times. Most were MCI's and MSA's.

I know now where there is and old Emmons P/P D-10 under a bed I can get for less that 1000 if she'll ever decide to sell it. Lots of good deals out there if you can find them.
Not a steel but in 1966 bought a pearl handle Colt 45 for 25 dollars and gun appraised at over 1000 at the time. SHe thought she was over charging me because she knew what her grandad paid for it back in the early 1900's. $12.00
I always carry extra cash with me for running into deals like that and then buy them before they change their mind.

My second steel after a Sho Bud Maverick was a Marlen S10. Black formica, great tone, maddeningly sloppy mechanically. I spent more time under that thing with an Allen wrench on stage... I was working at a music store which had sold a brand new Emmons S10 to a customer who returned it to order a doubleneck. I asked the owners what they needed for it, since they let me by stuff on time. They said, "Yours looks just the same, I'm sure we can get the same money for that one..." and traded me for the Marlen and $100. I need to find another of those deals.

My first PSG was given to me free of charge (and with a pac-a-seat, bars, a strobe tuner, and tools, too!) a bit over three months ago in October, 2011. My friend had inherited it, and had it over a year. He thought he'd learn to play it, but never even got off the ground. It was an old MSA Sidekick with a knee that didn't work right. It had other issues too, but the important thing, for me, is that it got me finally going in the PSG world. After about three weeks however, I knew I needed to upgrade, and ordered my Stage One from Doug, which arrived a week ago. That was my next best deal, because I absolutely LOVE it. At some point, I'm sure I'll get 'the ramblin' itch,' but for now, this is all I need!

In the same spirit in which I was blessed by receiving the the MSA for free, I just 're-gifted' it to a lap steel playing friend up in Chicago who has been wanting to get into PSG, too. He was going to sell a couple of his prized lap steels to buy a used PSG for $600. I told him to hold off, and offered to send him this one for cost of shipping. Even with just the A, B and C pedals only, he'll have plenty to start with, and my guess is he'll be ready to move up to something like a Stage One or similar soon. Like the saying goes, Pay It Forward!! Smile

First steel I ever bought, a brand new MSA Semi-Classic. 3 pedals, one knee, and a case.

I walked into a music store in Vestal, NY and it was on the floor with a $900 price tag. I told the salesman I was interested and asked for his "best price."
"Well," he said, "we bought that over a year ago. We had a teacher who was going to learn to play, then give lessons, and he left two weeks after we bought it.
I'm ready to move it, how's $500?"

I learned to play on that guitar, and kept it for 20 years. Best deal I ever got on a steel...

Well, I paid $1200 for my Sho-Bud Pro II Custom which I ordered in 1977. I think they were listed at about $2500 at the time, so I never could figure how the store owner made any profit on that deal. I just figured he knew I was a po' girl and he just wanted me to have it. He played also. I can still remember being in his store when he had Sho-Bud on the phone, asking me about color and suggesting how to set up the knee levers "for a lady", and did I want my name put on it in mother-of-pearl.

During a visit to Portland many years ago, Jeff Newman had occasion to play my 1972 Emmons Dbl-10 with 8+4 pedals.

He openly stated how impressed he was with the fabulous TONE this little guitar produced and immediately inquired as to when I purchased it and for how much.

I told him I purchased it in 1972, BRAND NEW from the Emmons Factory for $1,200 and he couldn't believe it. He explained to me that they were going for twice that much 'retail'.

I've felt guilty ever since..... that I benefited from such a great deal. Actually, I'd have married that sweet talking little gal with her great southern accent but she didn't ask me to.

In 1971 MSA D12, 8+2, it was about 6 months old, $350. Person I bought it from decided to get married and was going to let it go back, I bought it for what he owed on it. Kept it for about 32 years, and sold it for what I gave for it, saw it on Ebay shortly after that, it sold for about $800.

While onstage playing with some friends in Tampa FL...Our Steeler was playing a really nice Zum..I was inspired to take it up again and told him I was looking for a steel to buy...He turned and said, right there is TBs 72 PP Emmons 8+5 in the case....This guitar belonged to a gentleman that had passed in Tampa a few years earlier..HE was the original owner.....450.00.....I yanked my wallet out and paid the man cash.. I later sent it to be refurbished in Atlanta by Mac Atcheson...MAC charged me 15.00...YEP...15.00..MAC said it was hands down, the best sounding PP hed ever seen in his 70 years..Several years later, I traded it even for a Rosewood Mullen 8+5..I can honestly say I wish now I had them both back...Lucky for me, great guitars are coming through my shop all the time.....So I can PICK and choose which ones to KEEP!!!

Lynn, you got a very nice deal on that PRO II. I'm trying to think back to 1977, and when I was looking for my LDG. I might be wrong, but your PRO II was listed at around $1500 to $1600. So you got that guitar at around his cost. I'll take all the flak if I am wrong. Long time to remember the dealers cost. I still have the catalog, but don't have the dealers price sheet.

My best deal has to be the Millennium U-12 that I found on E-bay.

I came into some money in 2005 or 6, and used some of it to buy my first Milly, (also a U-12) from MSA, (Thank you Johnny Cox for building it,) and for the next couple of years wished I had a second one, but I had already invested the rest of the money, and didn't want to liquidate the investments.

Then the second one turned up on E-Bay. I got it for half the price of a new one, (I put it on my credit card and sold a mandolin and one of my older steels to cover the cost) and, at a time when the wait time for an MSA was between 2 and 3 years, I got it in 10 days.

When it arrived, it looked like it had never even been removed from the case.

1980- I drive down with a friend, Marty Stuart, to Virginia- he is going to med school in Georgetown-he also was a great steeler at the time. We stayed with another old friend of mine where we checked out the local classified ads...listed Emmons D10 PP Black 800bucks.
I had to get back to NY so Marty goes to the guys house when I leave. When I get back home the phone rings and Marty is on the line playing the Emmons with no amp and it sounds great. Still does. Thanks Marty.
