I spent the day there. Attended Chuck Lettes's c6 seminar. Chuck is a great player with a great sound. Really nice song selection too. Other standouts for me were Doug Livingston with his 8 string Cruztone, what a sound from that guitar and a great song selection. Rose Sinclair from Austin did a nice set of swing and jazz on her double neck stringmaster, really liked her. Scotty played, don't need to say anything more about that. Last up for the day was Bobby Black, one word, unbelievable. He makes it sound so easy, there's nothin' to it.
Lots of good music and players and backup musicians. I hope they keep the non pedal room next year. |

Nice review, Will,- but don't put Margie Mays
and Ivan Reddington on the side back burner. If you like smooth, relaxing steel,- you can't forget them.

Right you are Wally. Margie was fantastic very impressive and Ivan is smooth as silk and with his Ricky Panda had one of the best sounds there.
It was a great show. |

Yes, it was a great show and we're glad we attended. It was our first time at this particular show having attended the AISGC Show in Winchester IN,
Scotty's Show in St Louis, HSGA Show in Honolulu HI and our own HSGA Show in Joliet IL.
Alan Akaka will be our special Hawaiian guest in October at Joliet IL. Check www.hsga.org later
for details.

The non-pedal session kept me glued to my seat all afternoon. I particularly enjoyed Chris Kennison's Hawaiian set on his Rick Aiello frypan. |

Putting together the Non-pedal Session was a labor of love for me. We were treated to a variety of music played by some mighty fine musicians. I'm hoping that the Non-pedal Session will become a regular feature of the SWSGA's annual show, and I look forward to seeing my friends at the Dallas show in March.

Here is my view on the lap steel session - LET'S ALL WATCH IT GROW.
I can not speak for the whole board but I for one will be working hard to keep it going.
At the Dallas show I will go campaign for more players for next year.
I sent an email to Chuck telling him it inspired me to go to work on a lap steel again.
Carco and Chuck blew people away on the main stage with those lap steel licks.
Thanks for all who that played.
Thanks to all the help that were playing in the back up band.
The board kinda put me in charge so I deligated it to Chuck Lettes the very next day - my best idea - he kept me informed and I stayed out of the way.
Thanks to all and hope we have a couple days of it next year.

Thanks to Chuck Lettes for organizing the Non-Pedal Room at the Phoenix steel show. It was a great idea to have Carco and Chuck play (awesome) sets on the main Pedal Stage the day before to let folks know it was happening and what to expect, and there was a good audience turn-out as a result. I enjoyed all the players and was particularly knocked out by Bobby Black. |

Chuck gave a great lesson. He's a wonderful and generous teacher. He even told us some of his secrets such as: ... well, y'all better go see for yourself next time. But, I'll say this, my wife heard an improvement in my tone the very next day.
The hours went by joyfully when the pros played. There was an unplanned Panhandle Rag marathon which was a treat since we heard many excellent variations.
We also were treated to some unusual tunes played on lap steel. I thought Doug Livingston was joking when he said he would play Liberace. But he wasn't and gave us I'll Be Seeing You In All The Familiar Places. You could see the sequins glittering!
Rose Sinclair played Honeysuckle Rose, obviously inspired by Django. Loved it!
Lastly Bobby Black played If I Had You. Oh, no, that was on pedals. Sorry. I was too awe struck to remember what instrument he played. I just remember the magic of his playing!

Good idea, Joe. A larger room will be good.
Also, I would suggest some type of small PA system.
I don't believe anyone sitting beyond 3-4 rows from the front could hear any of the announcements or introductions. And then,--you have the talkers that just stand in the back of the room and talk all the time. They should be quiet or go out in the hall to talk. As a long time steel fan/player(since I was 5,-76 years ago), I want to savor every single note including the harmonic endings.
Good luck, Joe.
