i have a GREAT '38 Ric B-6 and it looks like one of the pot-metal(?) tuners is about to disintegrate on me, (i have the worse luck with old tuners) plus some others are sloppy. looking at the tuners, it looks like you'd have to find a perfect fit for the holes. i know the post war plastic tuners are prone to crumble and shrink also, so surely someone has a replacement solution (that hopefully doesnt require mods)
- what is the recommended epoxy for filling in nut slots - i recall Rick A. giving the name once
-lastly, when i touch the horseshoe i get a hum - i can crank it as loud as i want and if i dont touch the hs, its dead quiet - but touch that hs with your palm and it hums. of course, the easy fix is not to rest your palm near it...but..i recall again, Rick A. saying these werent grounded to anything, so ??
There is certainly nothing "wrong" with this pickup, it will peel the paint off the wall on 3. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

The hum is likely a grounding issue in the wiring some place. Are your tuners the metal button type ? Lots of different tuners available, but not sure about the shaft spacing on late tuners, compared to the early B-6.
I have some of the black stuff that I used to repair bakelites. Don't remember the name of it, and not sure where it's at here right now ! |

Devcon Plastic Steel ... tape off the sides ... Fill the slots ... Let it cure for seven days.
As far as the hum ...
Low level hum is expected in prewars because the strings are not grounded .... But when you touch the magnets ... The hum issue should improve ... Not get worse
You have a ground issue ...
Check the usual suspects ... And get a DC resistance ... Should be around 1.5 k Ohms.
Often the magnet wire pulls away from the ground lead ... Age, corrosion, etc ... The unit can still function but it is very noisy ...
That is the worse case scenario ... |

i'm assuming these are Kluson Mfg tuners, i've been around a lot of pre-war instruments but i dont recall any like these. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |
