Sounds like Buddy to me, but I am not familiar enough with Day to be able to tell his playing.

I think at that period of time they sounded a lot alike,,,,as time went on they both had a more distinctive sound,,,,both "grew",,,but in a different way,,,,,JMHO

I don't think Day had the mastery of harmonics that Buddy did, and two prime examples of that are here in Another Bridge to Burn, and also A Way to Survive.

March 12, 1966 (18:00-21:30) / (22:00-01:00): Columbia Studios, 804 16th Avenue South, Nashville Tennessee; Producer Don Law & Frank Jones

RAY PRICE: vocal; RAY EDENTON: rhythm guitar; KELTON D. 'Kelso' HERSTON: guitar; THOMAS GRADY MARTIN: guitar/leader: BUDDY GENE EMMONS: steel guitar; HAROLD RAY BRADLEY: bass guitar; MURRY M.'Buddy'HARMAN, JR: drums; THOMAS LEE 'Tommy' JACKSON, JR: fiddle; WILLIAM WHITNEY 'Bill' PURSELL: piano

254. NCO 82386 ANOTHER BRIDGE TO BURN (Harlan Howard)

"Another Bridge to Burn" was one of 8 songs recorded
that day.

The Emmons/Price 60's Columbia sessions were Sept 26, 1962 to Nov 1, 1966 producing about 85 songs - one of the greatest runs in all of popular music. Here are some of the LP's where these songs were first issued. They are all masterpieces:

1963 Night Life
1964 Love Life
1965 Western Strings
1965 The Other Woman
1966 Another Bridge to Burn
1967 Touch My Heart
1967 Greatest Hits Volume Two

Bob, who was the bass player on that record? My guess is Joe Zincan or Bob Moore.

Hey Johnny -

I'm working from the Ray Price Bear Family discography: The 1/12/66 "Another Bridge to Burn" date only lists Harold on "bass guitar." This has to be an error because - as you observed - "Another Bridge to Burn" has acoustic bass. I'm thinking it's Joseph S. Zinkan (w/ Harold on tic tac) because Zinkan is listed on all the other Emmons/Price Columbia's including the dates before and after the 1/12/66 date. Pete Burke plays bass on "Western Strings" w/ Harold on tic tac. A lot of discography's have errors but they give us a basis to work from.

Lightnin, Buddy Killen and Bob Moore and Zinkan are on the Jimmy Day sessions: Killen on "Crazy Arms" - Bob on "City Lights."

The other songs from the "Another Bridge to Burn" date are: "I'd Be a Legend in My Own Time", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Don't Touch Me", "Go Away," "I'd Fight the World," "I Want to Hear it From You", and "It Should Be Easier Now." It was a very good day at Columbia.

There's not a cut on that album that isnt a stellar example of how to back up a singer, imho. I sure miss that nowadays.
Sounds like Joe Zinkan on upright to me.

No doubt the Big E and that Emmons is screaming. And some people ask "what's so special about an Emmons push-pull?" No sound like that in the world!

Emmons Push-Pull: "No sound like that in the world"

Right you are, Mr. Strayhorn, and thank-you for your part in that legacy.

While listening to "Another Bridge To Burn" I noticed another great Price/Emmons collaboration in the 'feature-related' column. One of my all time favorite Ray Price tunes, "I'm Not Crazy Yet". Mr. Price, Mr. Emmons, take it away....

Thank goodness for the absence of needless duplication. Jimmy Day's touch and tone went places that Buddy's didn't... and vice versa.
