Many LG threads have been popping up and I was wondering about listening recommendations. If you had to put together a compilation of Lloyd's best recordings, what would be on it? Let's say a "top ten albums", or maybe an hour worth of singles? There are a couple of solo albums on iTunes, but what would be his best stuff as a sideman?
Thanks! |

Hi Alex,
Feel free to check out the website www.lloydgreentribute.com. There are over 500 soundclips, the majority features Lloyd backing up vocalists. Clip information also includes details about the year it was recorded, album info etc. Enough music to keep you spellbound for quite a while!
Kind Regards, Walter _________________ www.lloydgreentribute.com |

One of Lloyd's efforts that I don't see mentioned much is one of Ricky Skaggs' lesser-known tracks. It's a Sonny Curtis song called 'He Was Onto Something (So He Made You)' I believe that it's on his 1989 'Kentucky Thunder' album (that's the album's title - not his subsequent band-name).

it doesn't hurt, either, that this is one of those immaculate Skaggs offerings with exceptional production and all 'round top-notch playing from all concerned. I miss those records! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I love Lloyd on Johnny Paycheck's Little Darlin' recordings, as well as Charlie Pride's Live At Panther Hall.
As far as his own recordings as a leader, Big Steel Guitar and Green Country are fantastic, but they might be hard to find.
There are plenty of others, but these are what come to mind first. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Of the seemingly infinite number of great tracks he cut with all kinds of people one that I have always liked is from an otherwise all rockabilly record by Robert Gordon called Are You Gonna Be The One. The track is entitled Standing On The Outside Of Her Door. It is from 1981 and I think it is a great example of his playing from that period where his style and sound were so well developed each recording he made sounded, to me, like perfection personified. |

The Byrds 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' features Lloyd on most of it. It's fun to try and figure out which tunes are Lloyd and which are JayDee Maness.
don't forget Paul McCartney's "Sally G"
more recently is 'Georgia Hard' by Robbie Fulks... what a great album. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

Roger, He Was On To Something is one of my favourite Skaggs tracks. I remember Lloyd talking about Skaggs making him do a lot of takes before he was happy. |

Thanks guys! I'm gonna look into all of these. Scott, I know Robbie Fulk's album quite well, I didn't know Lloyd was the steeler on that. It is a great album. I particularly enjoy "All You Can Cheat" and "Each Night I Try". |

I thought Tom Brumley was on Georgia Hard and a lot of other recordings with Robbie Fulks. |

i believe all the steel on 'Georgia Hard' is Lloyd... he even gets a shout-out on "Each Night I Try" (along w Redd Volkaert!) love his dobro work on "If They Could Only See Me Now" too. great great stuff.
Brumley played on some other Fulks stuff. he's definitely used steel over the years. John Hughey played on Robbie's recent Michael Jackson tribute of all things. One of John's final sessions.
getting back to Lloyd, this thread made me dust off some of his old LPs i haven't enjoyed in quite awhile. it's really impressive how many quality albums he released considering his constant studio work in the 60s and 70s. 17 solo albums according to the tribute website Walter posted!
two of my favorites:
and one of the greatest album covers ever:
he's like the Barry White of psg here. with titles like "Kiss the Moonlight" and "Twilight Dew"... it don't get any smoother. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |
