Hey guys, after purchasing Zane,s old personal ZB 12 string 5x4 about 28years ago,I was wondering how many still play this tuning or a modified version. The tuning has served me well although I had to learn quickly how to transpose tab and courses from E9 since nothing was available for this setup. I really don,t have a lot of perspective since it,s the only one I,ve ever played. I,m really interested to hear from y,all your experience with this tuning and where you,re at now with it. All comments welcome.

I have been playing Zane's tuning for approx 33 years now. I have made a few modifications. I have added only a few extra changes, but the original concept of the tuning is still there. I love this tuning and all it has to offer. I still find new licks each time I sit behind it. I see you are from Arkansas also, we need to get together and swap licks.

Dan,good to hear from you.maybe we can arrange a jam session sometime. Zane grew up with my Dad and Mom here in this little rural community of Gooescamp Ar.,When he moved back to Scranton in the late 60s , that friendship was renewed and Dad played bass for Zane for 18 years or so. At the time I played lead guitar and I never wanted to play steel until Zane and Faye had moved to Little Rock. Oh man! I know now how much I have missed and how far along I coulda been if I had been taught by one of the masters,Zane Beck. This tuning is just one of the things he left for you and I. I still use many of his little riffs and runs and I always think of him when I play them. All things said, I still believe his tuning was decades ahead of it,s time. And I,ve never met a more giving person.

I still play the same guitar with Zane's tuning that he built in 1978. I like Dan am always learning new licks and songs and constantly see the versatility of his tuning from straight country to jazz. This tuning has lasted and will continue long after we are gone.

Count me in as a ZB E6/9 tuning fan although unlike you guys I didn't start on this tuning. Started fooling with it about three years ago and can now safely say I am a full on convert. I wouldn't recommend anyone who is gigging regularly try this as it can be quite hard to break old habits. I learned the standard Emmons style E9/C6 but did spend some time on a B6 oriented uni in the early 80's. When you consider the ascending order of the higher strings, the missing middle E sting and the main pedals being Day oriented that is quite a few habits to break. For me it has been a fun journey that I feel I am just getting started on in many ways.
