I am running windows Vista Home Premium on my home computer and have differing results with downloading or playing audio files. Often when I want to play an audio file from a website that has a audio file ( like Greg Cutshaw's wma files, or files on Ricky Davis' history site)shown as a hyperlink, I get a message at the bottom of my screen asking if I want to save the file or not. It will not show an option to play the file or open & play it, so I can only download it. Once downloaded, it will play in Media Player 11 by double clicking it in whatever folder I have saved it in. But many sites have an audio file playing as you view the home page and they play automatically with no problems. (Billy Cooper's site and the Show-Pro site are examples.) Also, any link to You Tube files play properly. I have looked at all the 'control panel' & 'internet options' settings on my computer along with the 'default programs' settings for audio files, and Windows Media Player is set to be the default program for any file it can play. To confuse me more, I have a computer at work running Vista business edition and it will play the audio files on a site without having to download them, just clicking on the link. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? Thanks in advance for any info anybody might have. Larry Robertson, Parker, CO (Denver) _________________ Website: www.Music2myEars.net

This sounds (pardon the pun) like a configuration issue in your browser, not in Windows. Check your browser's media options for how it handles different file types. Once you find that tab, look for various audio file types and see if you can add the option to Open or Play them.
For instance, in Firefox 9.0.1, when I open Tools > Options > Applications, I get a long alphabetical list of file types. When I scroll down to MP3, there are three entries. The first two say "Always ask." The last one auto plays in Windows Media Player. The Always Ask option will ask if I want to play the file and if so, in what player, or save it, and if so, to where.
I can easily alter the option in that menu. Hovering over Always Ask displays a flyout box of various options for handling the various file types, in the browser. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Greg and Ricky do not embed an audio player on their websites. This means you'll only download the sound files. The Show Pro site has an embeded audio player that is using the Windows Media Player extension to play the files in the browser. This disables downloading of the track but obviously enables automatic playback.
There are no settings that you can change to make Greg or Ricky's site work differently unless you want to rewrite their pages.
Hope that helps... |
