I've started playing more and more pedal steel lately, and I'm realzing that my amp is the weak link right now. I've been playing though Fishman Loundbox 100 (acoustic amp), but I don't like what the tweeter does for the highs.

I've got my old bass rig left around though, and thats a Markbass Little Mark III head (Specs: http://www.markbass.it/product_detail.php?id=99 ). After reading the general success people have had with the GK MB-200 I think I can use my LMIII. It puts 500 into 4ohm and 300 into 8ohm, so 8ohm probably would be a good idea to "hold back" the amp a bit, but honestly I'm not too worried about "over amping" since I'll go deaf before I blow a speaker I think. Putting 2x the rating doesn't scare me. 4x does.

Slightly concered about matcing speaker to cab size. Its a bigger deal in bass-land but it still makes a difference here. The cab I have is my undersized 15" carvin cab. Rough exterior dimensions are: 20.5" H x 17.25" x 12" D. It barely fits a 15" speaker. With a rear port, 1.5" x 15.75". I don't really play bass anymore, and I'm okay with re-purposing the cab, its too small for a proper bass cabinet anyway.

My PSGs are a Desert Rose S-10 E9th with a Georgle L EON, and a late 60s Fender 400 with Jaguar type pickup set up for sarcred steel/blues type playing. Being tolerant of overdrive would be a plus.

Any thoughts? I'm not sold on this being 100% the best plan, so I'm open to other suggestions. I'd rather not spend very much though, since I just bought the Fender.

Hello Ben. Is your rear ported cab slotted or have a round pipe port?

FWIW, I have a couple of steel guitar cabinets with 1501 BW's that measure pretty close.

App. 22 1/2 hi X 18 1/2 wide X 12 deep. These are open back and really efficient and great sounding with the steel guitar.

I had some front ported cabs that were near 18 X 18 X app. 10 that sounded good also.

The open backs have a better overall sound for me, but the closed/ported have more focus and slightly more volume.

I would give it a try if I were you. Sounds like it would work just fine.

Does the cabinet still have it's current 15", if so why not use that? Carvin's 15" speakers are more of a full range PA speaker than a true Bass speaker anyway. The ones they use in their bass cabs are the same ones they use in their PA speakers.

Another option other than the Black Widow or Carvin speaker might be a Jensen Mod 15-120 which is pretty inexpensive.

Carvin speakers are worse than midrangey. No sparkle at all in my PA experience.

A good steel guitar speaker like the 1501, JBL K130, etc. is what's needed here.

The cab is from this combo (Pro Bass 100) that I may have, ermm... made the built in amp catch on fire... Ooops! Ok, no actual flames but sparks and smoke... Rock band + 100 watts + bass generally = death and destruction...

I replaced the head with the LMIII with the intention of getting a "real" bass cab eventually, but ended up leaving the band I was playing bass in before it was an issue. The LMIII fits right into the slot from the poweramp though, which is awesome! (side + back vent, so it can breath)

Its a rear slot port, 1.5" x 15.75"

The stock speaker sounds 'okay' with pedal steel but its a case of "don't know what I'm missing" because I've never run my steel through a 'real' pedal steel speaker/amp setup. So who knows? Not me. But it seems unlikely that a real 'steel' speaker will sound worse.

I am planning on using it for steel guitar. My bass is gathering dust. Pedal steel gets more fun every time I sit down.

Sorry for any confusion. Very Happy
