you mean rip one track from a cd?

Windows media player has that option, just click on the rip tab and choose the track?

or do you mean filter out the voice?

There are some programs that say they can but the results are devestating for the song..

Its blurry you miss 60% of the intstruments and generally its sucks...

Why don't download the karaoke/backing track from internet or youtube?

Not that Im aware of, no. Publishers would be up in arms if there were though.
A MIDI file of a song (instrumental) can very easily be printed out as a score though.

Greg, a music instructor that I used to work with told me about a Cakewalk product that he used to do what you describe. He wasn't working from CD, he was recording himself playing guitar or violin and the software would transcribe what he had played and recorded. His final goal was a CD with a score and he said that software worked well. This was quite a few years back. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but that's what I recall. As Clete suggests, you'd want to be careful, that is, get permission, before publishing someone else's work. HTH.

Converting audio from a single instrument track into MIDI data (which can be printed) is probable, but converting a group of instruments from a single audio file into separate files is a much bigger challenge. It may be possible, but Im not aware that such a program exists, yet.

if there where such a program it has to use certain algorytms to find and extract the frequentie and recognise the tone from every instrument in the song and convert it to a midi file while filtering out the vocals.. im working with a lot of music programs over the last 18 years and i never found something that can do this.. at least in a proper way.
