Topic: Two Emmons Bolt-ons PLEASE CLOSE |

I have a couple D-10 Bolt-ons and it is time to let one go. Both are excellent complete restorations by Mike Cass -- not just set ups -- full restorations. Every single part is correct. For example, I provide Mike with correct 1960s slot head screws and the correct era bellcranks when he does my Emmons work. If you are having an Emmons restored you might as well make the effort to make it absolutely right. That is what Mike Cass does.
The 1965 D-10 has four long silver knee levers, and it is a VERY RARE red belly Bolt-on. It has been reflocked because it was very dirty underneath, but it was flocked red originally. This is a very special guitar that I would not mind keeping, but I am fortunate to have so many that it rarely comes out of the case, which by the way is an original tan Emmons case.
The 1966, or maybe 1967 is a Black Belly, which means it has the common black flocking. It is an 8/4 guitar as well and it has all correct parts. This guitar has the original Norlin case Emmons used at the time. It is an invoice number guitar.
Both guitars are clean and sparkly. Both are Emmons set up. Both have original Emmons pickups -- solid black for the 1965 and white sided for the 1966/67. Both have new mica, which is so glossy it is hard to take good photos. The decals for both are reproduction Emmons decals. I am still trying to get pictures taken that show what the guitars really look like. I just get a lot of glare and reflection. Picture a brand new Emmons on the showroom floor -- that is what these guitars look like. I will say that the Black Belly plays easier than the Red Belly, probably because of improved leverages Emmons developed over the year that separates these guitars.
I will let only one of these excellent Emmons Bolt-ons go.

I can send you the photos I have, but I am experimenting with getting better ones that do not give the appearance of flaws that are not there.

Chris,
To get a good picture of a shiny item, use a Polaroid filter. I used to do that when I was in the custom truck business (The Armadillo Dually).  |

| I think you can get polaroid filters to fit most all cameras. All you have to do is rotate the filter until all the reflections are removed, very slick. |

I want to add that Chris and I have done a lot of business together, and when he says a guitar is in a certain condition, you can take it to the bank. He is honest and stand-up.
I'd also add that I've sent Mike Cass seven vintage Emmons guitars for restoration, and they came back to me in showroom condition.
Frankly, I'm surprised at his asking price for the red belly. I'd value it higher than that.
Just sayin...

Is the red belly changer mounted flat to the neck, a' la the early wood necks, or is it mounted in the more common 1/8" milled slot?

The red belly Bolt-on is a normal looking Bolt-on with the changer mounted to the tailpiece with the milled ledge. It is not like the wood neck Wraparound Bolt-ons as in the Fall 1964 Emmons guitars #7 and #8 with the changer axle pillows on top of the unmilled tailpieces.
Fellas, Herb had BOTH of those guitars at the same time. Talk about rare -- Wraparounds with wood necks and Bolt-on changers.
The Black Belly plays better than the Red Belly -- better leverages, i suppose. But, the Red Belly is red underneath, and has the old original tan Emmons case that Herb calls a special shade of pink.

| I have a 66/67 Bolt-on exactly like the black belly. Case is yellow inside, also. 8F4K. My formica is the black leather. I would love to have the black one, but economy says hang onto my money. I know I won't sleep nights knowing there's a homeless one out there. |

Just freakin' WOW....
To me; these are just priceless pieces of history. I'm a huge Sho~bud nut of course...but I would knock over 50 guys in line to play one of these.
Also add that Chris is an Awesome stand-up guy; and is very passionate about Steel guitars; and as honest of a man you can ever meet.

Here are some more photos of both. If you see a white banded pickup, it is the 1966. If you see a pickup with an all black pickup it is the Red Belly. Also, the Red Belly has white leg tips and the 1966 Black Belly has black leg tips. Otherwise, the guitars are very similar except that the 1966 is smoother to play, meaning it has lighter pedal action.

John, that was a nice visit. Since then, the single Bigsby board and the Bigsby in the back left are gone, but they have been replaced with others.
Recently I realized that it is possible that the single board could have come from Leon McAuliffe's Quad turned Triple. However, it is more likely that Bigsby simply was using up some 25 inch scale necks. Paul Bigsby made the guitar for a teenage girl that lived on his street. She grew up to be an old lady in Pasadena.

Chris, the Standel on the left is Deke's old "prototype" right?? I regognize the two tacks and the black Standel name plate. Great amp, I've played a few gigs with it and even recorded a 78"rpm ( !!! ) with it  |
