Here's some extremely rare audio from a scarcely heard steeler from the last of the golden years of Hawaiian steel guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q8klCWi950

I'm sure the YT poster, Ronald Vaughn, stops by this forum on occassion, let's hope he adds his comments on this new treasure he's graciously provided.

I have some more Lovey Lui from a different '73 show, of higher sound quality, that I hope to put up asap. She really had her own style and obviously was a fine singer as well. Talent!

Wow! Great historical find, Ron. I'll be looking forward to hearing your tracks of Lovey. Here is the only photo I have seen of her.

Actually, she wasn't. Lovey recorded one tune with Richard Kauhi Quartette - "When Your Lips Are Pressed To Mine" - and it was part of a trade. Richard wanted to record Lovey's composition "Haunani Mine." Lovey would agree only on the condition that she be allowed to record a vocal with Kauhi's group on one of her favorite tunes.

Lovey Lui was the steeler on most* of the recordings by Pauline Kekahuna and Her Hauoli Girls on the Waikiki Records label. (*The other steeler on sides by this group was Joe Custino.)

I may be rare, but I model much of my Hawaiian style playing after Lovey and Joe - both very much under-rated players, both focusing more on a chord-melody style than the single-string.

Nobody is yet able to tell me what tuning Lovey played to get the growling bass notes she got on most of her work with Auntie Pauline.
