System Check is a type of malware known as a rogue security program. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from my MBAM web page after reading the detailed instructions on the page. Install MBAM and make sure to leave the default options checked. It will install and update itself, then begin scanning.
Once the scan has completed, a box will pop open notifying you that malware has been found. Click on the Details button to see all of the bad things it found. Leave all found items checked, then click to delete/remove all threats.
You may be instructed to reboot and rescan upon entering Windows. Let it happen.
Reboot and scan again, removing any remaining bad actors.
If you are happy with the results, consider purchasing a lifetime license (through my links please), for under $25. The license activates real time protection and very frequent updates (hourly if desired). along with remarkably fast "Flash Scans." _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

John,
Please reboot into Safe Mode With Networking. Update MBAM and scan again.
System Check is a serious piece of malware. It might be one that hides desktop icons and Start Menu links. It is important that you don't empty your temp directories until the fixing is over.
What brand and version is your obviously ineffective anti-virus program?
What is your OS and Service Pack level?
Are you running with full Administrator privileges? _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

The system check is gone, but my desktop icons and startup menu links are still hid. My anti virus I believe was norton, not sure. Os and service pack I guess is windows vista. As far as administrator privileges, I don't know. I'm computer illiterate.
What do I need to do to get my icons and startup menu back?
thanks again John W. |

Here is a link to the BleepingComputer.com page about removing System Check malware and restoring your hidden icons and program links.
Read the entire page and download the UnHide utility and run it. Follow the exact sequence of procedures.
Do NOT delete any Temp files until all of the fighting has ended. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
