Do decals go on bare wood or do you put down a layer of lacquer first ? |

I've always put them on before the lacquer with no problem. |

These 2 of mine are on top of the finish. IOW, put on after the fact. FWIW. |

Tony, you don't want a nice lacquer finish with stickers on top of it. Put them on the bare wood, or do a couple coats of clear them put them on, then spray more clear. That's the way ShoBud did 'em, underneath the finish. Most at least, maybe not on some of the earlier builds. |

I've never put them directly onto the bare wood. I have put them on after the sealer and before the lacquer with good results _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

I think i,ll try to put em over the sealer, ive got it stained really dark blue, i have to cover up the inlay and stain the apron and sides of the neck. It will be darker than any blue ive seen on the forum so far, i hope it will look ok... |

Sounds pretty. Good Luck and be sure and post some shots of it when finished. |

...you don't want a nice lacquer finish with a decal in any form! Make a pearl inlay, have someone laser-cut a piece of aluminum, do anything – but avoid the cheap and nasty stickers, thats my not so very humble opinion. |

Many companies have put their labels on top of a lacquer finish. I don't see the problem. I'd do it as orignally done. If that means under the finish. Depends on the brand. |

Having put on many (100's) of decals, I always sandwith them between coats. Now, I am talking waterslide decals, not some kind of thick stickers. Make sure the decal is dry before top coating. Let your first few coats over the decal be not real wet or you could wrinkle or even wash away the decal. Put enough over coats so you can wet sand after the lac has dried and get a nice level buff job. Most decals are fragile and will abrade away, so protecting it under a finish is highly advisable. A sticker and a decal are two different things although we often refer to both as "decals". A decal can be put on over sealed wood then lacquer over it but I would think a sticker which is what many builders use should be on the top of the finish.

I've often wondered what would be the best way to cover a stick-on logo on mica without messing the mica up. I prefer the logo under clearcoat or lacquer. Could the logo be covered while on the front apron mica? |
