I sent National an email a while back asking about an 8 string square neck. I was told they don't make them. I can't believe it! I could have sworn another forum member bought one just last year.

There are eight string resonator guitars, but I don't believe I've ever seen an eight string tricone.

Building a new, square neck for a resonator guitar is one of the easiest jobs you could find. Unlike a regular guitar...
[1] You don't have to worry about the action, because it's going to be played from above.
[2] You don't have to worry about fret rattle, because the strings will never touch them.
[3] You don't have to worry about neck warp. Apart from the neck having a much stronger profile, neck warpage as the guitar settles in is not going to affect its playability.
In a few weeks I plan to build a 12-string resonator guitar. I don't expect the neck to take me more than a weekend, most of which will be the drying time of the varnish. |

Thanks everybody. Howard's was the guitar I was thinking of. I had forgotten that thread. But I'll check with Greg again. I think I would prefer his tricone to National's given my experience with the McKenna 8 string I currently own.
