I'm getting a Hot Rod Squareneck Tricone in the mail and am wondering what gauges and where to buy strings for the following A6 tuning:

E C# A F# E C#

Any suggestions or general string guidance for squarenecks would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

If you haven't already, you might want to try the Strings link at the top of the page.

Is the tuning listed from high to low string or from low to high? It seems like you're using a tuning similar to standard C6th tuning:

1. E
2. C#
3. A
4. F#
5. E
6. C#

Strings for C6th tuning should work as well for this A6 tuning. As Michael said, the Strings link at the top of the page is a good choice and helps support the Steel Guitar Forum.

Good luck!

Rick, you might check out John Ely's (former Asleep at the Wheel steel guitarist) string gauge chart here:

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, folks. I did check the strings links at the top. Unfortunately it seems all there is here (and most places) are G tuning. I'm guessing it would be too much tension on a .059 string or on the neck to pull it up to a C#?

Yes Brad, the tuning I listed was from high to low. The 6th note really clumps the gauges too close for a standard G set to work. A C6 set would work. That's what I use for lap steel (also tuned to A6), but I can't find a C6 set for resonator.

John, that link is a great resource. If I have to put together a set of strings from singles that chart will come in handy.

Are there any preferred brands for tricones?

Thanks,

Rick

Brad,
On an older thread (that I can't find now) I think you mentioned a "6th" tuning that could be attained by using a standard string set for Open G tuning. Can you remind me what that tuning was?

Never mind, Brad. I found it.

I've had good luck in the past with A6th tuning on an acoustic resonator guitar.

1. C#
2. A
3. F#
4. E
5. C#
6. A

You can use the same string gauges as you would for open G tuning. Tune the bottom three strings up a whole step and the top three strings down.
Your C6th tuning will be at the third fret if you capo.

Rick,

I have been looking at those guitars myself, thinking about getting one.

When you get yours could you post here your thoughts about the axe? Maybe a couple photos?

Check this link to Breezy Ridge, scroll down to C6 Reso:

I've been wanting to go to A6 from G6 on my 8 string SQ neck for a while but I'm still a bit confused about gauges.
It seems the lower strings on a SQ neck reso set are considerably thicker than those for a lap or acoustic Hawaiian. My understanding is the thicker strings are necessary to make the cone move properly.
so I was thinking:
low to high
F# or G .59W
A .52W
C# .38W
E .32W
F# .28W
A .22W
C# .18
E .15
Any input from more experienced reso players would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Ah, John, thanks you for that link...just what I was looking for! Yes, I definitely will post my thoughts on the hot rod once I get it. I posted a thread a while back looking for feedback on them and found surprisingly little out there. I've been borrowing a friend's republic tricone for a while so I'll have that comparison as well....so stay tuned!

Rich those guages look good, except I would probably use the commonly used 56 on the bottom. I routinely tune between E and G with the 56 and it sounds/feels fine. Beyond a certain point more pressure on the cone will decrease performance.

Still waiting on the hot rod. I guess they were waiting for a replacement tuner before sending it out Confused Should be here in time for Christmas.

Thanks for the website. looks like I still have some time to order the strings...

The gauges Mr. Auldridge recommends are E-14, C-18, A-24, G-26, E-34, C-45. The other two notes of his 8 string C6 tuning are the first string D (that's right-out of sequence)-16 and 8th string A-56.
