I just saw a Youtube of Ivan playing Faded Love. Reminded again of what a great pedal steel player he is.
I spoke with Ivan several years ago via the forum but lost touch over time .
Anyone here in contact with Ivan? |

Is he still in the Phoenix area? The SWSGA show is coming up in January.Is this the video?

Tommy he lives about six miles from me here, and up until about six months ago he would swing by once a month or even a couple times a month, and do lunch or just hang.
About a year ago he came by the shop here and left (ALL) of his gear except for his Dobro and ask me to sell it all for him, and I did. (Needed to get his pick up fixed)
I've not been able to reach him by phone lately as well, so he's dropped out again as he does some times.
He'll turn up soon I hope. I'll keep trying and let you all know if he surfaces.

Tom M. Ivan is hanging in there. He does not play anymore and doesn't have a guitar anymore.
You know, when I came to town in 1975 and went to check out Ivan at Mr. Lucky's, he scared me to death I'm telling you. Ivan played with such authority and drive, and big if you know what I mean. When I walked in to the club and Ivan began to play, it was like a strong wind hitting you smack in your face, just scared the fire out of me.
One thing that always amazed me about Ivan was, he used a thumb pick and only (one) finger pick, yet he sounded like he had a pick on every finger.
Ivan has been through a lot of hardship and heartache in his life and if he had not been a strong man it would have killed most of us.
I guess I need to go pick him up for Chinese food, he loves it.

i played at mr. lucky's in the '70s for one week when they were looking for a replacement for ivan who was going to quit, i guess. after that i think they talked ivan into staying!
j. david sloan and ray were very nice to me though, even though i was pretty green at the time.
i never heard ivan play but gathered he played mostly c6. |

After I moved to the area in 1974, I got to hear first Ivan and then Danny Sneed at Mr. Lucky's. Fortunately I had a trick or two up my sleeve to get in even though I was underage. Both players were stunning and, to the beginner I was then, their playing was mind-blowing.
It took a few years to realize that my perception wasn't just because I was new to the instrument. I'm still stunned when I remember what I heard Ivan play back then. Incredible. |

Chris I. your pretty close, Ivan played the A6th tuning and could actually play a lot of E9th on that neck.
I recall playing in the Monday night band at Mr. Lucky's for about 3 years all together.
I played thru Ivans big Aims amp with 6 10" spks. in it, what a tone.
Any way, I'd move his red ZB back out of the way and I recall the front (E9th) neck had only 3 strings left on it, the rest had rusted into and fell off the guitar.
A lot of folks forget that Ivan was a great singer with a big deep voice, and he used a lot of chap stick and the mic was completely covered in the stuff. I shortly started bringing my own mic.
Those were the days, wow.
