Anyone have recommendations on converting VHS tapes to digital files, then finally DVD's? I'm looking for gizmos and software for doing this, on a 2011 Intel MacBook Pro? I'm leaning towards the TerraTec G3 from Amazon, but open to informed opinions and experience. Thanks!

Hey John... there's some software by Roxio that does exactly what you need. I got it awhile ago, but haven't gotten around to loading it up yet.

I know, I know...I was going to join Procrastinaters Anonymous, but I keep putting it off...

The best option is to buy a standalone DVD recorder (or one that is combination VHS and DVD recorder that will copy from the VHS tape).

PC's, whether a MAC or a Windows PC, can do it but you tie up the PC for a long time and have to be careful that you finalize the DVD correctly so it will play in a DVD player. The standalone DVD recorders do all this.

There have been other posts asking about this and the general concensus is to use a standalone DVD recorder. I've seen the same thing on other PC forums.

Jack, thanks for the tip, I was wondering how well that would work.

My only hesitation with that is if I want to edit the videotape footage in any way, I'd still have to digitize, make edits in a program, then record that final footage to a DVD-R disc. Do I have that right?

Skip, I do have Roxio's Toast 11, and it does do video conversions, but I still need a gizmo to get video into my MacBook Pro (btw, I kind of followed your example, and my only desktop Mac is now the MBP, an early 2011, i7 processor, and internal SSD---the thing is wicked fast!).

I appreciate this and any other feedback, forum buddies.

John, here are a couple of pics of what you get in the box...I'm just using a cheap vhs player. When you launch the software it will prompt you to connect to a vhs source.
