...Neither one of these are my picks for 'best solo' or, favorites, in particular.
They are both fitting, and appropriate for each song.

"Redneck National Anthem" - Vernon Oxford, mid 70's, Steel player (?)(1:18 -1:33)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAe6awI8KmQ

"Willin" Linda Ronstadt - 74'- - Sneaky Pete (1:34 - 1:48 )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI1UBiWsm14

This is one of my all time faves, though
"Fool Such As I" - Baillie and the Boys- Sonny Garrish (1:24 - 1:44)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzDPaChuczk

*(Sonny is getting married this coming Monday, the 26th of December)

Nothing Can Hurt You by Lloyd Green....featuring Ricky Skaggs. Also I like Paul's solo on Keith Whitley's I'm No Stranger to the Rain because of the difficulty in playing that well in tune with a piano....or at least it is for me.

"Sweet Memories" by Jeff Newman live at the PSGA show in Conn.
Also by Jeff "City of New Orleans" live
on the same day.
They are far and above anything I've heard live since.
His talent as a player was much underated.

I have a few favorites:

I sang Dixie - Tom Brumley sounds easy but if you screw up the 2nd part it's almost impossible to gracefully finish.

Intro to What am I going to do - Rusty Young http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1F3fenV_GE

Buck Reid's awesome work on White Freightliner

There are so many great players such as John Hughey,Buddy E.,LLoyd Green, Hal Ruggs, and to many more to mention, all of them having their individual styles,I can`t pick just one. I am still playing gig`s and hear so many people that don`t know what the Pedal Steel Guitar is or how it is played, but they just love the sound that the steel produces weather it is country or any other style of music. In my opinion there is no other instument that can give the sounds and voicing that the Pedal Steel brings for our listening pleasure. I could go on forever, enough said.

Lathan Mills Very Happy Smile

Most of mine have already been mentioned but also the C6 on Red Stegalls Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music. Also the one Mike Johnson did on the Family Reunion show for Rhonda Vincient's Beneath Still Waters.

Best ever, surely not but a darn good one, Lloyd Green on his Revisited album on So Sad with Junior Brown on vocals. Very relevant solo and track.

It would also be hard to forget Jerry Garcia on Teach Your Children. It did it for me and for millions.

And what about Buddy Emmons in Night Life. Magical.

Cheers

Has anyone said "Bruce Bouton's Highway 40 Blues"? The great Ricky Skaggs country album. That album was loaded full of great steel.

Most of the time, It's whatever I am listening to at the time. There are so many great solos. I have to always go back to "I Just Destroyed the World" Twitty/Hughey and "Farewell Party" with Lloyd. Another that gives me chills was Martina McBride's "She Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" with Charlie Whitten on steel. Those 3 make me wet my pants.

CHECK IT OUT HERE

Tone and emotion all played to the max.

I think Terry Crisp's live performance of "They asked about you" with Reba is one of the greatest solo's i've ever heard. I heard him play it live and it really did give me chills, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bCIFeaTwwc

this thread makes you realize that we've been lucky to have such emotionally moving steel rides to dig for many years.

when you think of just destroyed the world, lost in the feeling, and look at us and more....
john stole the show, created classic parts , and he was just doing his job. amazing!
