I'm hoping someone who knows will help me. I need to know which keys are the replacements needed for a '73 Professional, Gumby keyhead. I think the Rotomatics item # 102-18C are the ones. Is a 25/64" peghole size right? I know these are 18:1 ratio tuners, while the stock ones are probably 14:1, but I want the 18:1 tuners. Somebody help me out!!
Edited: And whats the deal with pricing with these on ebay. From U.S. sellers, they run around $55-$60 for a set of 3+3. 4 sets for a D-10 adds up!! Then you got sellers in Hong Kong selling the same set for around $30. Are there some made in China that are of lesser quality? I know some of the older ones were made in W. Germany, but what about the new ones??

Todd,
25/64 is equivalent to Ø.3906. Most tuning machines are sized for a Ø10mm hole which is Ø.3937. So yes they will fit in the hole. Just make shure that the nut and shaft are long or short enough to fit the width of the head.
Point of reference: on the old 'Buds, Grover hadn't come up with the shorter 210 machines yet and the shafts on the original tuners were too long. If you look at string 5 and 6 you'll see that the end of the shaft is ground off and the end of the nut most likely is also. When mounted, the shaft ends on mine are so close that you can barely pass a Ø.020 string between them.
If you reinstall the old ones after removing them all, make sure those 2 short nuts go back on those 2 tuners or you'll risk shearing a longer nut in half. (been there, done that)
If memory serves me correctly, I had researched those tuners and I believe that the 102's are the ones.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. _________________ "Don't fergit to kiss yer horse!"

Thanks Michael, I'm aware of the 5th &6th string shafts being too long to fit the keyhead. What is the best way to shave some length off those shafts with out damaging tuning key or the gears?? Bench Grinder? |

That would work but be gentle. The shafts are chrome plated brass and it will disappear quickly.
A good sharp file and a steady hand works well also. Very little will actually have to be removed.
Remove a little and check. This will need to be done to both simultaneously so that they can be checked for fit together.
Tape off the top of the hole that the shaft comes out of. You don't want any filings to enter the worm gear mechanism. _________________ "Don't fergit to kiss yer horse!"

Thanks, Michael. I see the 210's you mention, that are designed for pedal steels, but I dont think those wouldn't work, or look right on there. No mounting screw, and the mounting pin looks like it would need to have a small hole drilled for it opposite side of the old screw hole. I'm sure they're perfect for newer steels. That's a shame too, cause buying a set of 10 of the newer psg keys is a whole lot cheaper than buying several sets of the old style Rotomatics! |
