I wounder where do you buy your strings?
I found greath set of C6 and A6 at juststrings.com but I don't find set of Leon Mcauliffe's E13 or acoustic G6 for my dobro 8 strings. Do you buy single strings? |

Just Strings sells single strings. For the dobro set, just buy a regular G 6 string set and buy the other 2 as singles. You can also make your own E13 set.

I've built my own sets and bought sets too. Steve's in Montreal has a pretty good selection, including a C6th
pedal set [10 strings], 13 to 70 gauge. You could probably make a E13 set out of that. Most music stores carry an assortment of single strings. b0b does too. |

For Leon's E13th just can use the JustStrings SIT E7th sets and add a plain .017 or .018 for the 2nd string (the C#). You move the rest of the strings down and you get to choose what you want for the bottom two strings (E&G#, E&B, or G#&B). You do need to tune the .030w string up to F# from E (which is what I do when I use this set for E9th).

The strings are semi-flat nickel wound which a lot of people here like for lap steel but you might want round-wound for Dobro. (Semi-flat strings start out with round windings but the surface is ground flat.) The SIT E7th set is $5.91 but with a flat rate shipping charge of $6.95 to the US and Canada so you probably want to order more than one set of strings. (Their Aroma AT300B clip-on tuner is really nice for $13.96 and the Planet Waves string winder is $6.42- I ordered both of those to pad my order and was pleased with both of them.)

Steve, good tips for the E13, I always buy guitar strings at justrings.com and I love the Sit steel guitar string so I will make the E13 from the E7 like you said.

| I just make my E13 set from a normal pedal steel E9.....you get a couple of extra strings but the set is cheaper than making it up by adding extra strings to a smaller set....just use the pedal D# string for the E13 C#....the rest of them work as designed... |

Steve: The Leon McAuliffe E13th tuning goes from a low E(~.056) up to a high E(.015). An E9th pedal string set only goes down to B(~.038) so you would have to add .046 and .056 strings for the G# and E. (I believe that you are thinking of the high E13th tuning used by Little Roy Wiggins and traditionally attributed to Don Helms- although Don usually tuned the bottom strings to A and C#.)
Leon's E13 (with approximate gauges):
.015p E
.018p C#
.018p B
.022p G#
.030w F#
.034w D
.046w G#
.056w E
I do buy sets of E9th and C6th pedal steel strings to handle the more unusual tunings. And as a regular guitarist, I keep plenty of plain strings on hand so it is the wound strings that I look for in the sets. (I have no problem mixing and matching plain strings from different mfgs- IMO they are all basically the same although the ball end wrap is more secure on some of them.)
