Interesting...maybe late 30s. The seller should be able to check the mfgr date/year with the serial number.

The Gibson Electric Steel Guitars book mentions them on page 37, as a $2.50 option available in 1937. I've never seen one in person either.

last line of listing:

sounds like yet another seller watching way too many American Pickers and Pawn Stars shows - which have made anything housed in an old case/trunk a 5 figure holy grail.

this is cool and certainly needs to be preserved and not rot away, but i think they are in for a shock when it doesnt appraise for 5 figures...i would est more like $1500 in this condition, and that would be generous.
of course you cant tell people this when they come to you for an appraisal - they somehow already KNOW what it should bring, they just need someone to verify their established value or better yet double it.
