For just under $2000, you can get a Guernsey Resophonic, which is as good as it gets. The tone is perfect, the workmanship is excellent and Ivan Guernsey is a great guy to do business with. I own two of his guitars and highly recommend them. He is in Indiana and can be reached at 812-293-4524.

For less than $1000 you can get a very nice Melobar resonator guitar. Within the 1000-2000 range look at the Guernsey, Crafters of Tennessee (built by Tut Taylor's son), Liberty Guitars, or even a Dobro or National.

I'm real happy with my Guernsey also. Its a beautiful guitar that sounds fantastic. I brought it down to Nashville when I first bought it and the dobro players that checked it out tried to get me to sell it to them !
