On older Sho-Buds and some MSA steels, there was a type of Grover tuning gear mounted on the headstock that was like a 102 C Rotomatic with the exception that the gear housing was press-fit onto a plate with 5 male pins. Over time, these pins sometimes loosened and the plate and housing separated.
I'm wondering if anyone has been successful refurbishing or repairing this type of 102C Grover gear. If so, what did you do or use to keep the plate and housing tight and together? I'm thinking of clamping the two parts of the gear and using a strong adhesive that will adhere to the surface, something like J.B. Weld. Of course, I don't want the adhesive to seep inside and ruin the gear. If anyone has been successful in dealing with type of Grover gear, your comments are appreciated. (And, yes, I know I can just replace the gear.)
Thanks in adv,

If i am reading this right some time back I will call it the cover over the gear came apart on my old MSA. I put it back together with JB weld being careful not to get it on the worm. It was still holding a few years later when i finally sold it after 35 years plus playing it on and off the road.
Take the tuning key out of the steel and do not over use the JB weld, let it harden before putting back on the steel and it should work fine. Tracy |

Thanks, Tracy, for the benefit of your experience. That's pretty much how I envisioned doing it.

Sorry,

Sir Bob, I have some machine heads I pulled off my old MSA. They are Groves with the 5 pins that hold the together. Send me personal EM, lets see if they are the same. I had to change hole sizes when I changed to 14/1 Groves so they are now extra around here. |
