Alder, Swamp ash, mahogany, maple is a bit bright, but just like an old Gibson EH-150, Flame maple top on Mahogany is just right!!!

Mike
PS...Koa, if you can get it....Also, Korina or African White Limba is nice....Walnut....

I made a couple of lap steels out of white oak and they sounded great and had a pretty bright sound to them. Almost any hard wood will work as long as it's close grained.

I made one a while back with a maple center, seperate top and back and bent sides (all spruce) sort of a lap steel version of a 335. It sounds pretty good.

The one Ben Harper had on the AG cover was amazing looking with it's flame Koa top.

I think it's also important to consider the type of pickup you will be using to compliment the wood choice. Lighter weight/less dense woods like swamp ash would be good with a Fender type pickup, but Fender pickups might be to harsh/bright sounding in an already bright wood like maple.
