Ok, I've cleaned every part and purchased all the additional parts I need for the restore of my MSA S-12. I've been sanding the crud off the pedal bar and knee levers using the information I've gotten off the Forum. However, if a part isn't really scratched or gunked up do I necessarily have to sand it before polishing? Also, do I sand the chrome endplates? There is a scratch on one, can it just be buffed out?

I bought a bench polisher and fooled around with it a little. It seems like the polishing step is going to take quite a long time.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Allan,
Basically what Jason said, except for chrome...Never sand/scuff chrome, buff only.I don't think MSA ever used chrome plating.

Thanks for the info, guys. If the endplates aren't chrome, are they nickel plated? The aluminum pieces are dull but can be buffed shiny, the endplates are still pretty shiny after 37 years.

Allan,
Before I did anything I would start another topic to Mr Anderson with the serial # of the guitar you have unless you know someone local that can tell you for sure about the endplates being chrome, or polished aluminum. After chrome has been scuffed/sanded...it's ruined. If there is a local motorcycle shop, they could probably tell you what you have, and what to use to polish/buff it. I have had good results with "Semichrome", most bike shops have it.

FWIW..Someone may have had the endplates chromed after it left MSA.
