Topic: Just Bought PT MP9 |

I'm going to make the switch (probably slowly) from Sonar to PT.
PT MP9 is on sale at Guitar Center for $199.99. I have been considering PT for a while and with that price I had to jump on it. I have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R audio interface unit and I have an iLok key so I should be OK. It would have been nice to get PT10 and not be locked into MAudio/Avid hardware but that will come later.
PT will put me in "sync" with other local studios. |

Hi Jack,
I run PT8 and one of the things that came out when Avid released PT9 was the ability to use 3rd party hardware and not be locked into Avid's hardware.
Having said that, it may be that PT MP9 is just for M Audio hardware but I can tell you that from everything I have read on the support forum for Protoools, it would seem that PT9 does support 3rd party hardware.

The MP9 version is only for proprietary MAudio devices. But, as I have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R unit I'm OK. It was a relatively less expensive way to get into ProTools.
I now have to start the process of learning a new DAW, as I have Sonar. When I first got into computer recording I wanted to go with ProTools but it was locked into proprietary hardware and I didn't have any MAudio hardware. I got a lowball "competive" price from Sonar to upgrade from Cubase 3LE so I started with Sonar. Both Sonar and ProTools have their pluses and minuses, but PT seems to be the predominant DAW. |

| Jack, may I sincerely suggest you get a copy of John Keane's book "ProTools for musicians". It's written from the perspective of imaginary sessions where you do everything you'd need to for an actual session, with humor and good tracks... a fun and easy way to bypass the dry manual and go directly to real world usage. Really helped me. |

Mark, I just bought (downloaded) the Groove3 tutorials for PT9. I'll also get a book of some type.
I've been through the first couple chapters in the tutorials and found out some of the same keyboard shortcuts I've been using in Sonar are the same in PT. e.g. space bar to start/stop playback. |

| Almost all of the other books and vids I've seen go over basic functions and some shortcuts. Keane's book goes deeper into the actual things you'll need to do to set up phones mixes, import tracks, edit and use plugins, etc. while cutting past all the fluff. |

MArk is their a way to convert audio to midi in PT? Been loking for an answer but can't get one...Thanks for the help....Welcome to PT Jack...

Mark, it looks like that book is an old version and possibly a new one is coming along. It was written for PT7 or 8 considering it was published in Sept 2007.
He is a local guy for you, as it says he has a studio in Athens, Ga. I assume you've been to his studio.
I'll wait and see if a PT9 version comes out. I'm not a complete recording "noob" as I have been doing recording for about 15 years and using Sonar for about 4 years. I've done some successful sessions for local singers and tracked steel for other studios including New Zealand and California. |

Yeah, I found that book on Amazon. Amazon allows looking at some of the pages on line. I'll still wait until I go through the Groove 3 video tutorials and then probably go after the book. Groove 3 is what Sweetwater Music uses for their Pro Tools customers.

That was a good session and professional mix. I don't have the sophisticated equipment that he has in his studio. I have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R interface unit and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 interface unit (the Focusrite has the better preamps). And a Presonus tube mic preamp. |

Jack congrats on the new DAW. I'll bet you will enjoy it a lot I hear so many good things about PT. There's probably a lot of folks that would gladly switch from their DAW to PT. I'm not thinking about doing the same but if I were I just can't imagine how much money I have invested in Cakewalk I started with Cakewalk 7 and I have either upgraded every year or so or just out right bought new versions when they came out. It's hard to tell how much money I have invested in my DAW but I know it would be up into the 1000's of bucks.
But I digress good luck with pro tools and I hope it's everything you have always wanted in a DAW!!

No, you can't do this.
I have PT 9.0.5 on 10.6.6 on a quad core iMac. I am a bit unhappy about the price of the upgrade to 10 however, even though I'm native and not HD. A bit of a ruckus at Avid, they laid off 200 people last week and the company is in a sketchy transition.
And I can also recommend the "mixing rock music" tutorial in Groove3, by Kenny Gioia. It's very good. I've been with PT for 9 years and this tutorial taught me alot. |

| Bob, as I originally stated I wanted PT when I first started with computer based recording but the hardware I had at the time was not compatible so I went with Sonar. Sonar has served me well but with Roland taking over and the latest buggy X1 and now their "nickel dime" approach, or more like paying for fixes, I've had enough. This not to say that PT is without problems, from the comments on the Avid and gearslutz forum there are problems with it too. |

Hey Jack, I think you will find it to be a positive move, given your experience.
On the book,s my take is " Pro Tools 9 Ignite" is the one to go with, even if you find PT8 Ignite, they are real close. I have a couple of books but "Ignite" is the reference that is sitting on the workstation...
The price is good, I purchased PT 8 MPowered when 9 came out , Musicians Friend had it for $149, full version...couldn't walk from it.
There are excellent YouTube vid's as well. Oh and some not so excellent ones too !

| I have Windows 7 64 bit and I.E.9. Not a problem or conflict with PT MP9. Besides, when I'm using DAW software I don't have any Internet programs, actually any programs except the DAW program and possibly the control program for my device. I don't want anything that even potentially could interfere with the DAW program or the audio stream recording. That is "basic 101" of recording. Also, I have all Windows event sounds turned off for the same reason, I don't want it to interfere with recording. |

excellent advise above.
I too have my DAW on a separate PC, no internet, no additional MS programs, no mail..no nuthin...WIN XP with 4 gig ram.
No viruses. I do have the ability to go on line with this PC but only for functional purposes with regard to the DAW.
No issues with PT . .The only reason I would consider a WIN 7 PC down the road would be for the extra RAM...
I transfer files the old way, USB flash drive ...surprisingly, this method still works !
