Hello from around Indy.
When I was looking to get a headphone amp I did a boatload of research on everything that was available. I ended up getting what's called a Cafe Walter headphone amp. You can plug your steel (or whatever) into it and an MP3. It's small, built like a tank in a palm-sized metal box, simple and easy to operate and comes with a lifetime warranty. Runs on either 2 nine volt batteries or a supplied adaptor.
It's super quiet with no noise.
Yeah, the price will scare you at $169. That alone will send most people looking elsewhere and there'll be plenty of other recommendations by others extolling the virtues of cheaper units. But ive had it about a year now and, in retrospect, it's been one of the best equipment purchases I've ever made. And that's coming from a gear junkie. Put another way, it's one of the last pieces I'd ever sell.
Enuff said. Do a search for it online for more info. |

Amplitube is a free iPhone/iPod app and a $40 iRig connector box - plug in your steel, your iPod and your headphones, play along with anything in your iTunes library....amp simulator, song looper with speed control, recording setup, etc.

It requires no external power and all fits in your pocket

The Telonics pre-amps, PRE200 and PRE1000 both have headphone amplifiers built in. You can play the steel, feed in a BIAB, CD or I-(device) via the Aux input jack and play long with it. The headphone level is totally independent of the main output levels, so you can play with the phones, then switch on the speakers and not adjust anything.
These pre-amps are the foundation piece for a Telonics rack system. So this could be the beginning of your rack.

I usually just use a Pod to practice in hotel rooms. They're small and easy to use. Getting a used Pod Xt should be pretty cheap.

You can pick up a Behringer or any other brand mixer on ebay for next to nothing. They will allow you to do a lot more than just play with headphones. You can also mix your effects and tweek your sound before you go out to a PA system when playing live. When I bought mine there was a lot of them for sale. |

I have an awsome sounding rack setup I use to play my tele thru using headphones but haven't tried Steel yet. I have an ART tube channel preamp going into abanez SDR1000 digital reverb into a Fender Bullet reverb amp out of headphone out to a Sampson S phone headphone amp. I can also run my Ipod with music or tracks and seperate Guitar in one ear and Ipod in other and adjust volume of each or put both in both ears. I use Nady QH560 headphones because they sound as good as my studio headphones and I can hear the TV and my wife which is a plus. Ps I set the reverb in Mode 2 which is plate reverb and 3.5 which I think is time adjustment. All I know is it sounds better than any of my Fender Peavey or Evans amps.Jerry |

Another thing you might try is a mini-amp. I use a Genz-Benz mini amp for many of my concerts, and at 3 pounds is easy to set up and use (through headphones) in a hotel room.
Best of luck whatever you decide. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net
