Why do some players play with .017 and .020 on strings 5 and 6, while other people play with .018 and .022? what are the tone a n d playability differences associated with these string gauges.
personally I choose to play with the .020 on string 6 because i like a brighter sound. What are some of your opinions? _________________ Keenan Friday

Keenan it can depend a lot on what changes you have on those strings ... along with the guitar, some guitars just don't like certain gauges, with regard to longevity!
You should experiment to see what works for YOU ! _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

I guess I am weird. I play with a .017 and a .022p. The .022 seems to be more prominent sounding when I use the B pedal and the knee that lowers the G# to F# for "movement" licks. The .020 seems to not cut through as much. Personal preference I am sure.
I do like the smaller string for the B string. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

I like the .018 because it seems to blend better with the other strings and not get too doingy sounding. I use a wound .022 because I don't need to screw around with it. Its more stable. _________________ Bob |

I prefer an .018 and a .022pl for a short scale guitar like a Sho~Bud or early MSA. I like the .017 and the .020pl for the longer scale guitars like the Emmons.
I never cared for the wound .022, though I used them for a time back in the 70's, before I developed a preference for the Emmons-type guitar. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |
