In keeping with the recent bebop lap steel offerings here, I worked up a version of "'Round Midnight" on my lap steel. I guess it doesn't have much to do bebop chops, but it's sort of an anthem for that era of music.
This song always gives me a melancholy feeling, very different from Monk's later music that has a more playful, whimsical vibe. It's a dark, moody piece, (though I tried not to make it a dirge), and it seems to suit the sound of the steel guitar.
I used my homemade 8-string lap steel for this one. It's the same C13 tuning that I use for Hawaiian music, but this is a very different feel. No harmonic accompaniment, just upright bass and steel.

Damn- we're going to have to start calling this forum the "Jazzy Steel Without Pedals"
Thanks for posting this!

P.S. One tip about the SoundCloud window- the volume control is hidden at the top right corner of the screen. I sure wish I knew it was there when the sound came blasting out at 125dB in the middle of the night awhile back... _________________ www.blueguitar.org

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone. Hopefully, Monk isn't turning over in his grave somewhere.
Mitch, there's no need for embarrassment about your Hawaiian tunes. That style is just as difficult as modern jazz to play with the right feel.
I don't venture into jazz territory on the lap steel very often, but I'm beginning to enjoy the challenge of working within the limits of a fixed tuning more and more these days. |

SWEET! I love all of the space in there, sans comping. Well done. |
Yeah, that was a good decision, perfect for the tune. |

Hey, that was nice, Paul. A lot of Monk's music actually works well for steel guitar. I used to do a version of "Little Rootie Tootie" on C6 pedal steel that uses a lot of the low end of the guitar. Never recorded it, though.
Thanks again for all the kind words, everyone! |

Thanks so much, Jeff and Bob. Gary, my recording setup is pretty straightforward. The steel was recorded direct (with no volume pedal) through the DI input of my Hamptone mic preamp. I used the same preamp for the bass, with a tube microphone. I use Logic Pro software for recording and mixing. There is very little eq on the steel, and no other processing, just reverb. I did put a little light compression on the mix bus. The steel guitar is an 8-string that I built a few months ago. It has a Truetone pickup, which I like, although it is a little noisy in my environment. I may change that to an Alumitone eventually.
Thanks again,
Jerry |
