I'll be 64 in February, and started playing steel guitar in 1969.
So I guess that's 41 years of blessed enjoyment.

38 and just started learning the psg. I've had 4 lessons so far and I will not quit. I waited until this past summer to try and learn guitar but hated it.

I'm coming up for 68 in a couple of days time, started playing steel around '64,still playing and enjoying (most) moments! I play in a Dire Straits Tribute band, and may I say it's not easy trying to cope with Paul Franklin licks at 68 ?? Mind you who am I kidding, it was never going to be easy,was it?
Now then where am I ?????

54. There's a ton of younger people picking up steel guitar. It's all over alt/everything, a lot of younger players in Europe edging into the Scandinavian jazz scene - but they're not much posting here. Probably too busy playing to post much, but I have to say your learning rate can greatly accelerate by paying attention to some things here.
The six-string forums all seem to go through periodic spates where kids with lots of time on their hands fill up lots of space repeating things they read on other forums. And "senior statesmen" are anointed by the number of posts they've made... If you ask a question here about "telecaster bridges" here you will get answers from 12 guys who've collective owned and/or modded 60 Telecasters and played them out professionally. The pro-to-amateur ratio here is higher than any other forum I've seen, if you include engineers, builders and others who work or have worked in some aspect(s) of music and play steel because of what it can do. |

I'll be 21 in January. I think there's actually quite a few young steel players around but most of them (that I've met) aren't SGF members, and many aren't really into the traditional styles of steel playing.

32 and playing the steel for almost 3... months.. YEAH!!
I used to play loads of instuments like banjo, guitar, bass, drum/percusions and mandolin.. Had to quit because of an non treatable musscle illnes.
Im still in a band doh  playing keyboards and now im giving a go on the instrument ive fallen in love with when i was just a little boy  |

16192 days old here!!! ......been playing multiple instruments sense age 13,and have been on my favorite instrument(pedal steel)8 months so far,with 240 days and at least 300+ hours of pure determination.

72, as of today. Feel 30. Still load up my truck to play a jam on Wed. evenings. Take 6 items to the jam. Steel, amp, MartinD28, Gibson mastertone, seat, and big gym bag full of accesories. Starting to work in a mic, and stand, so I can add harmony to some of the songs others sing. Just don't know how Sarah Jory does it.

arrived on this old orb in feb 1933, started playing and studying 6 string in 1940, moved to 6 string Richenbacher in early 1948, started playin a modified Stringmaster (by Sammie Lewis) in 1962 (6 pedals and added two knees) and have owned a plethora (love that word got it from Bill H.) of steel guitars since. Lost my hearing completely 3 years ago and haven't hit a lick since. Hate it too, love music and can't tell one note from another.
