Watching a clip of Rusty Young with Poco playing Indian Summer I noticed he plays with a hexagonal bar which then he switched back to round about 3:40. Are these commonplace? I've got to say I've never seen one before. Surely it is played with an edge and not a face although he does appear to have the face down. Check for yourself

Jim Dunlop sells a Sitar bar, with a flat about ΒΌ" wide milled down it. If used with care and some practice, you can get a full-on sitar sound, or a bit less buzz and you can sound like a bottleneck slide.
I have one. I don't use it much, but it's fun

The sitar bar is no longer a part of Jim Dunlop's product line.

If you have an un-plated, polished stainless bar, you could just go to a machine shop, and have them precision grind a flat on it. I had a buddy who was a lathe operator make me a bar with a flat. Hardly ever used it, but it did sitar sounds quite nicely.

Don't think I need one. I've got my hands full with the round one.

Can't say I have ever had the need to sound like a sitar.

But then what're you gonna do when they call for "Games People Play?"

Or you can play a frightfully obnoxious version of "Free Bird!"

That's never happened, but it is a good song.

I have a Dunlop sitar bar. I used it when I need to play Norwegian Wood.

But The Dunlop is flat on one side. I've never seen a hexagonal bar like that before.

Maybe the different sides produce different sounds?

My dad made me a brass bar with a flat edge during my experimental phase (early 70s). Can't remember using it much but it was fun to mess around with.

If you're content playing single notes, you can get much more control over it just by using a regular bar with an extreme forward slant. You can play a whole octave on four strings without sliding your hand, just change the slant.
