"Last Date" is a 1960 instrumental written and performed by Floyd Cramer who was a pianist inducted into the American Hall of Fame. He was one of the architects of the "Nashville Sound.", popularizing the "slip note" piano style where an out-of-tune note slides effortlessly into the correct note.... a segue to steel guitar perhaps. This was a major departure from the percussive piano style which was popular in the late 1950s. This tune reached chart heights in the US, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. Covered by Skeeter Davis, Emmylou Harris, Conway Twitty, R.E.M....
Played here on Steelocaster A6 tuning, duet with Charles Campbell on Stratocaster and rhythm backing. Key of C.

I liked that a lot Kay, and like you I have taken to tuning a bit lower to Bflat.
Nicely done.

Thanks to all for the appreciation. That was a lovely tune that Floyd Cramer wrote.
I have heard a few versions on pedal steel but none on lap steel. Jim, I actually kept the tuning to A6 and got the low notes in the second part of the song by using the low strings (8 to 5) with the centre of movement around the third fret for the notes in the key of C. I find that the Steelocaster has a particular sweet spot around there. I use the bridge pick-up.

Good rendition, Kay. I like how your vibrato fits any style of music. Long live instrumental music.

Not only was the melody performed very nicely but....
A lot of YOU TUBE and/or other recordings by steel players (IMHO)....have distracting accompaniment. The balance you have is really nice to hear. |
