I have an acoustic Weissenborn copy by George Boards and I would like to try the low bass D tuning on it.
I also want to be able to re-tune a whole tone lower to C without getting the strings too floppy.

What gauge would be the best, so it is not too heavy and will not damage the guitar, but I can tune down if needed. (If this is not recommended, I will simply not tune down, but I still need the gauges.)

At the moment I have the open G tuning and that set of strings is too light. I can easily press down each string to the fretboard at the 12th fret with one finger. I cannot do that on my other lap steels. The weight of the bar also affects the tuning on those light strings.

I would normally use a set of strings from about .16 to .56 for that tuning.
This set of John Pearse strings might work as well.
