Don't look first....just listen to this You Tube cut from NJ based touring band Fountains of Wayne and see if you can guess who the very well known pro steel player is, playing some nice country rock riffs on this session.

I've had the pleasure of working with Chris Collingswood from FOW. He's done a few gigs with my band the Shinolas. Chris is a big fan of country music and is a great song writer. A real good guy. He loves pedal steel.

I'm not sure if the second part of the solo is a standard or a slightly distorted pedal/lap steel guitar. The steel in the background could be Greg Leisz.
Very nice song! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

That is good traditional steel playing. I'm quite surprised! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

It's from 2003, before opinions regarding Mr. Randolph solidified. |

i recognized Robert's playing, vibrato & human voice on the chorus/solo he took
not the A&B pedal chord action
Sacred steel & Robert's style, can't miss it |

Really nice. Reminds of the Graham Parsons or Flying Burrito Bros days.
I listened to a couple of other songs by them hoping to hear more from RR, but they had no steel or the songs stunk bad enough that I couldn't get more than 30 seconds into it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Very nice indeed..Reminds me of the "old days" as well... Man did we have great music back all those years ago. This tune was a small slice of that genre produced in the modern age... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I didn't know it was Robert until the solo, but I wasn't surprised about his country playing. I've got a recording somewhere from the first Sacred Steel convention in 2000 where Robert and I jammed for an hour or more on fast country stuff. |

I don't believe these guys are from Jersey. I just downloaded their album with the song 'Action Hero' and I would have bet they were from LA/the Valley.
I guess NJ is the east coast version of the San Fernando Valley |

Jody Porter is from Charleston. Used to see him play around here when he was a young teen. His Dad, Tom Porter, was a friend of mine. He worked at Capricorn during The Allman Brothers era. |

One of the youtube comments states, "Why are parodies of country better than country itself these days?"

At the risk of answering a rhetorical question: Because the folks who do the parodying actually like country music, while most country these days is trying really hard to be something else.
I notice that the chorus denoues itself in a similar way to Johnny Paycheck's Little Darlin song, "I'm Barely Hanging on to Me." Different songs but the same rhythm and tempo, and the choruses unwind pretty much the same.
Maybe just a big coincidence but Robby Fulks, who did the infamous power-pop parody song "Fountains of Wayne Hotline," also produced the Paycheck tribute album, Touch My Heart. (Marshall Crenshaw sings "I'm Barely Hanging on to Me," Lloyd Green's all over the disc.) |

Hey Dan that is where I was born and lived there for 28 years! Sun Valley, CA to be exact. Seen a lot of acts at the Palomino Club, Ashgrove,Troubadour. You're right on the sound. I really enjoyed the 60's and 7o's there. Oh oh...I'm showing my age! I like that song but after listening a while they get sounding very similar.
