1 used 2pc. keyhead for a 10 string Mullen. From the era when Del crafted them himself. Off a 93 or 94, I think, Pre RP. No roller nut, no axle nor roller nut boss. Just the parts in the pic. The nut parts mount to the neck on a Mullen.
Plier? marks on a couple of the shaft nuts. See photo.
Worm gears recently cleaned and lubed. A few scratches here and there, but should polish out nicely.

I dunno. You'd have to ask Del about his reasons for building them himself. Many Mullen players preferred the look over conventional tuners. He doesn't do it any longer. I guess they got so busy building guitars that they didn't have time.
That nice lacquer guitar in the pic is one I had to sell for financial reasons. The tuners looked great and worked just fine but personally, I prefer the mini buttons like those of the Grovers.
The extra pair for sale is one I acquired through another transaction. I might be willing to trade these for some Emmons student style p/p parts like pedals and rods, crossrod cranks, swivels, KL parts etc. if anyone is interested. |

| Several years ago I had a keyhead break off one of my tuners and had to send the whole half of the tuner back to Mullen to have it replaced. I asked why they were not building them that way anymore and they told me that they were making their own at that time because Del didn't feel that any of the bolt on tuners on the market at that time were up to his specs. Of coarse now the cost of building them makes them prohibitive for production. |

During that period, "Grover" was going through a divorce, and the Wife, (referred to hereafter as "plaintiff") was going to get the company...So production ceased for a while...Del went to this tuner, and eventually asked the company if they would sell him just the gears, and keyheads.(They thought this was WAY COOL). He designed the headstock to house the tuner, and produced them until Grovers were again available...As for the advantage???...Who knows..Theyre GREAT tuners, and I like the look personally..
I do know that Mike has a tool to remove the sleeve...

Thanks Mickey. I don't know why the sleeve[s] were removed. The knob is easily removable, the shaft comes out and the gears can be accessed for cleaning and lube with no problem. Only reason I can see for bothering the sleeve would be for initial factory assembly or if a post needed to be replaced.
Anyhow, still got 'em, still for sale. |
