I read that Harry Manx doesn't (or rarely) uses slants. But his style is very unique. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Don Helms didn't slant much, and Cindy Cashdollar said years ago that she runs away from them.
They made big names for themselves being slant challenged, and who even notices the lack of slants when they play? |

Jerry Douglas uses slants rarely if at all. He is of course a phenomenal player, but due to his tremendous influence, slanting has faded from modern Dobro playing. Oswald Kirby and Josh Graves and other old-school players used slants aplenty. _________________ www.tomgraymusic.com |

When playing up-tempo songs, forward slants are relatively easy to incorporate in one's playing and you don't lose any tonal quality. However, IMHO, backward slants do not lend themselves to playing up-tempo and you have to concentrate in getting the Bar into the correct position. Even watching some experts on U-Tube I hear inacurracies, and the tonal quality sometimes suffers.

I use slants a lot - to play scales, to get diminished chords, etc. Tom Brumley used slants and pedals to get his solo on "Together Again" with Buck, and I saw Jimmy Day pushing pedals and slanting also. For a long time, I didn't intone properly because I was bending my wrist around to get the slant. After Alan Akaka showed me how to slant properly, they no longer trouble me. btw - A great ending is to play the tonic, then slide up to the IV chord, then slide up 3 to get the IVm chord, slide & slant slant just below the I an octave up to get a diminished chord, and then slide up 1 fret to the tonic. - Jack |

Thanks for that information- I was wondering if some of the earlier pedal steel players used slants.
