According to a Gibson catalog I have from sometime in the 80s these appear to have been standard equipment for Gibson at the time.

i have a nickel chrome set of these on a Gibson BR6
i got them off ebay - they came from China
the little handles that swivel out have a tendency to drop out on the ground
so........
i never saw Gibson tulip tuners just like these even though i did have regular chrome tulips by Grover for Gibson from the mid 70s

Crowbear, they do look like they were designed to fall off.

My experience is that they are cheaply made and will crack at the pin. A good idea in theory but really a gimmick.

I have my son's Gibson Les Paul with gold plated tuners with the cranks and he or I have had no problems with them. Thanks, Leon

The housing of the ones in the picture look an awful lot like the OEM tuners that Schaller was supplying to Gibson, Fender and who knows who else. I would be more surprised if there weren't several different variants from different sources than if there were. If the tuner button and swing-out lever were made from a decent gauge of steel and the hinge pins were properly set, there's be little reason to think they'd fail. And if they were a cheap potmetal imitation...

I'll go out on a limb and say that most of the cheap potmetal stuff from China is/was an imitation of a sturdier original design. Though, in recent years they've been graduating people with engineering and physics degrees at a rate of 40 Chinese to every 1 American. (In India it's 25 to 1.) And having seen how successful the Japanese have been with design, it's their stated goal to move that way themselves, away from imitation.

I have a 81 LP Custom with these tuners and have not had a problem, I only use them when I change stings and wind them up and then fold them down and tune the string to pitch.
Good Idea Smile
