I read on here somewhere that somebody said the height didn't matter, so I never did fool with it much.

Anyway, I just put a Wallace Truetone in my Mullen and the tone is like 200% better than the Alumitone was.

Just wondering if I should have played with the height any...

Tim,

I replaced an E-66 with an Alumitone on my Desert Rose, and thought I should keep the height up similarly. It seems I found that about 2 quarters thick is the string-to-pickup distance I really like. It was pretty tough to get the pickup installed that high as the screws that came with it were too short, so I found 4 longer ones and used the foam provided (plus some extra) to keep the pickup springy and tight against the screw-heads - and the pickup away from any body contact to control microphonics.

I love it. I found the pickup I like for this guitar.

And of course the chrome ones sound best Winking

I have a Truetone on one and a Alumitone on the other
They both sound about the same, but the Truetone hums
too much when the amp is anywhere near the steel. The
Alumitone is always real quiet. The space between the
pickups and strings is the thickness of 2 new quarters.
Keep in mind the the closer thay are the brighter the
sound, and the further away the warmer the sound.

Wow! 200%. That's a bunch 'o difference, but I'll take your word for it. I'm considering replacing PF 1's on my Mullen, but I'm thinking stock s/c's. Diff pickups may react differently with guitars, I dunno.

I replaced a Truetone with an Alumitone on a Zum. Didn't notice that much change. The Truetone definitely has a sweetness. The AT is better at smoothing out the high end and much quieter at wide open pedal. It's also quite a bit louder. About 1 quarter clearance is the best I could do without modding either the AT or the Zum.

200% was just a guesstimate Laughing The Truetone sounds way better overdriven, and sounds better up in Hugheyland, too.

Really? That's interesting. Are you overdriving a tube amp or using a stomp box?

Zendrive2 into a Session 400 for now till I can afford a new set of tubes for my Reeves. It actually sounds almost acceptable.
